Can an elder's wife be an unbeliever?

One elder in my hall was married before he joined the JWs. His wife continued going to a different church while he "progressed" as a JW. He eventually stepped down because too many people were being really stupid about him not having his wife in subjection.

Back in Cleveland one of our elder's wife never became a witness. She was too smart for that.

    She never came to meetings.

I guess it was for him not for her.

It was his hobby and time a way from the old lady.

I do know one worldly guy that met an inactive sister, they got married, he was curious about the JW beliefs, he decided to study with an elder, then he got baptized, now he is an elder, his wife is still inactive! ( She never goes to the Memorial ever since she went inactive!) One of the elders did not like the way it looks, he even tried to get him deleted as an elder, but the CO say he can remain as an elder, he is now the secretary (go figure)

if he was married to an unbeliever would he have freeness of speech to counsel the congregation on "Marrying only in the Lord" ?

It's a relative question with a relative answer. The short answer is "yes". The key thing to remember when discussing the Watch Tower Society is: There is NO unity.

You are assuming that he wasn't already married to a non-jw when he became a jw.

Blondie: Thanks for the research. That's how I remember it.

However, I knew guy who came "into the truth" while his wife demurred. Later, he was appointed a Min. Svt., a position he held for many years. He was a good speaker, came prepared to the meetings, and was a likeable guy, always ready to volunteer for any "privilege." He was never made an elder. The PO told me privately that they had discussed his appointment often and ran it past two different COs and the bottom line was that "his wife was not in subjection" and it would "stumble the friends."

So often what the Society writes is for public consumption and at odds with actual practice on the ground.

I know of an elder who was married b4 he was baptized as a JW. His wife did not share his opinion of truth.
