    Hi

My husband just rescued a pitbull-mix puppy from living neglected under a hole in the stairwell of an apartment across the parking lot from his place. She had no tags and was unleashed- free-ranging in the parking lot.

I was sceptical at first as I have heard that pit bulls are very dog agressive. When I aked our vet about it (I have a black lab mix, 1.5 yrs, as well) she said that all the folks at that vet owned pits and as long as the puppy is well socialized and rained well she will be fine.

The puppy, Butters, is already a little agressive- she fights to get her food before it is on the floor and she has growled at another BIG pit bull at Petsmart when my husband took her there.

Butters will be flying here (Tucson) this evening. I am going to introduce her to my other dog Rosie on neutral territory (a park) and then taking them back to my house after they have gotten to know each other.

I know that I need to feed my dog Rosie first and let Rosie intot he house first to establish their "pecking order" and I will be getting a book on pit bulls today.

    Any other advice?

    Obediance classes.

Check your insurance policy. Some renters and homeowner policies do not allow Pit Bulls. You want to get a vet letter stating that this dog is not pure Pit Bull to limit your liability and to keep your policy.

My son rescued an abused pitbull, Missy. She was very very timid. He had a chip put in her for identification. Unfortunately it is not GPS, as she ran off with my sons other dog, and she did not return. She was never a problem, very withdrawn though.

Most of my sons friends have pitbulls. They bring their dogs over to my sons house, like bringing your kids along, and they get along well. Sometimes we have had over ten visitor dogs at a time. We have never had any aggression among them.

The county we live in is one of the few that does not ban pitbulls in our area.

We feel pretty certain though that Missy was either taken in as a prize catch as she was beautiful or killed for the fear that people do have of pitbulls.

    Good Luck.

Pitbulls are known to be unpredictable, they can be quite the good house pets even with children and other pets in the house,

but one word of advise I would give to anyone owning one is never leave the dog unleashed when in open public.

They have been known to attack other dogs or even people when they sense danger. They have a built in biological attack mode

that can kick in the most unusual circumstance. This catches most people off guard since they seem so calm and peaceful around their home.

Or if you want to let it roam on its own, just as an precautionary step place a mouth muzzle on the pet to curb an unwanted situations.

The breed is not illegal where I'm from but when they have attacked people the owners end up with a huge law suit on their hands

by the victims and a rather large fine by the police, there have even been circumstances of the police confiscating the dog and having it put down.

Just a little fair warning, and yes even half breeds have this biological aggressive nature built in to them.

I should also say that some of this breed who haven't been mistreated and have trained properly are safe roaming around in public

their owners have taken the responsibility of that but then there are the people who haven't trained their dogs properly and the problems

transgress over to their new owners, its a bit of a game of chance, that might resolve into something bad for the owners and maybe even the dog.

You never know what a dog that has lived in a survival mode condition might do. Personally, I wouldn't take a chance on a dog that could kill or maim someone. But that's just me.
