I make about a $1000 a mo. US disability. I'm a non-denominational wedding minister, and was wondering if many people go there to get hitched. If I could have my SSD and work a little doing weddings.....maybe @ a resort, or freelance? Good idea? bad Idea?

Perhaps you should think about JAMICA.

According to the new Reformation of JWs Movement, the 144K are gathering there.

    Hablas Espanol?

I've been here for over 3 years now this time. I lived here for a couple of years back around 1990.

Puerto Rico is beautiful and ugly, cheap and expensive, safe and dangerous, crowded and untouched. And noisy.

It is the American Caribbean with Latin roots. Don't confuse Puerto Rican culture with Mexican just because they speak [mostly] the same language. Of course, lots of Puertoricans do speak English, but if you live here very long, the locals will really appreciate your efforts to speak Spanish.

The island has malls, movie theaters, Wal-Marts, K-Marts, Sam's Club, many major restaurant chains, casinos, golf courses, old Spanish architecture, suburbs, condos, slums, public housing projects, rain forests, beautiful beaches, mountains, crowded cities, traffic jams, toll roads, potholes, coconut palms, bamboo, bougainvillea, mangroves, friendly people, crazy politics, high speed internet, coffee, rum, lighthouses, caves, agriculture, industries, pharmaceuticals, universities, etc.

Should you move here? Have you ever visited? As much as I have enjoyed my time here, I can't see spending the rest of my life where I'm at. You could maybe visit first, then try it out for a year. There are no passports or visas involved. It would be a bit like moving to Hawaii, except you can get by a whole lot cheaper here in PR.

    Anyway, just some thoughts.

There's a possibility that your SSI benefits may be affected. Call them to make sure.

If you visit, check out Culebra and Vieques, two islands off the coast. You can take a ferry from Fajardo or a puddle jumper from San Juan.

Also, Puertorican residents don't pay federal income tax, but do pay and receive Social Security from the federal government.
