Did You Like Being Told What To Do When You Were A Witness?

I don't get it either. My father was a very independent, very intelligent , well-educated man who did not like anyone telling him what to do. He liked making his own decisions and thinking things through thoroughly. He was a chemical/textile engineer. I know there was at least one incident in his career where he did not get along well with his boss because he thought his boss was an idiot.
But he spent 25 years of his adult life as a JW. At least 15 years of that time he was absolutely devoted. MS, giving Sunday talks both at our congregation and others, hosting CO and DO in our home, etc, etc. He did start to miss a lot of meetings and question the elders about various topics in the last 5- 10 years of his life. A lot of this time period I am not even sure what was going on. I know he was the last person in my immediate family that still attended meetings. My best guess is that he did attend the Memorial in 1977. But he died suddenly about 3 weeks before the Memorial in 1978. I have no idea if he had planned to attend that year or not.
I don't get it either. I'm still trying to.

I'm sorry you lost your dad, scarred. I lost mine too, in 1979.

Yes, that's exactly how my son was. Guess it's just more proof of the power of mind control.

Independent personalities would have a very difficult time remaining in a cult.
Boy, I hope you're right, Minimus!

I didn't even like it before I was a jw.

wha happened?
I hated being told because "we say so" and expected to swallow it. I regarded alot of what the elders say as just opinion.

Yeah, I think you're right. I'm starting to read Steve Hassan's first book. I've only read the introduction and the first 2 chapters but I'm finding it very interesting.

This is very true. My family was in 3 different congregations in 2 states. They were all 3 very different . It all depended on the elders at each individual congregation as to how things were handled.

No, especially when it was done by a idiot elder who knew less about the subject than I did.
