There has been news lately of possible cyber devilment with the power plants, computers, etc.

Do you think this is idle 'scare talk'?

Do you think it is a real possibility?

Do you think it is a 'when' not an 'if'?

How would you even figure out what is happening without any communication?

    Sure it will go down.

It's definetly a question of when not if. Everything breaks down over time and lets face it what happened in New York

with the power grid was just a small sample of what is on the horizon.

But when it goes down it won't be for too long a time. They know the computers in the power stations and sub stations

are for the most part well out dated and they can't just shut them all off and do an upgrade. So they're making do with

whats there for now. They have back up plans in place to have some ready to swap out for when it does happen but

even the best laid plans have their unforeseen occurences as well as equipment that can and does go ka-plooey soon

as its plugged into the system.

I saw a special on the hoover dam a while back on PBS showing how outdated the electrical and computer systems

was in it and how so many other power plants are in the same shape whether they be hydro, coal, nuclear etc.

Add to this the increasing number of people moving in and being born and thats a tremendous strain on an already

over taxed grid. Energy will be our number 2 main concern in next few years right behind number 1 which will be our

trying to maintain suitable drinking water for the increasing masses.

Well rolling blackouts are expected in 2012 due to solar flares.

Of course there will be power outages. Don't you remember the big U.S. Northeast grid going down a year or so after 9/11/01?

How would you even figure out what is happening without any communication?

Battery-operated radios, one of many items Homeland Security advises U.S. citizens to have in case of emergency.

Good reasons to consider living off the grid using a methane digester gas and powered generators or wind power & batteries.

Since solar flares can damage solar panels it would be best to hold off until after the storm has passed to utilize.

u would not believe how archaic some of these facilities computers are. Up until a few years ago, the the dept of defense was using a 286 based computer to monitor some of their weather monitoring stations. Yes, not a 486 or a 386. A 286! We were contracted to repair these. Eventually we ran out of parts to repair these things.

I'm surprissed there hasn't been more blackouts. I'm thinking that the MB requirement of these viruses is too large lol.

Thats why i plan to be off grid ASAP. Wind, solar, gasification.

Are we so pathetic that we can't handle living without power for a few days/weeks?
