It is meant to symbolize Christ in Hades.
Usually the statues in a Catholic church are covered during Lent to remind the congregation that Lent is a time to focus on Jesus' passion (his suffering and crucifixion).
Some churches will remove the figure (corpus) of Jesus on Good Friday until Easter, as well.
