LOL @ Prisca...
What a great post Kismet. One of the reasons I frequent this board almost daily is the vast range of human expressions and experiences.
There's this weird thing with people who are .. familiar? intimate? with each other.... it goes somewhat like "if you don't see things from my point of view and agree, I just can't stand it.... I'll argue my point and badger you for causing me this grief and get things so twisted up that we can't even remember what the issue is....
I read this great book years ago about the circular dances people do (usually family members) because of that uncomfortable tension. I wondered where the "we all must be of like mind" law came from. Flash of insight! What a dumb law!!!
When people I care about don't "get it" when I find myself unwilling or unable to accommodate their - well, whatevers (example that comes to mind: ex-husband stating his excruciatingly insufferable and meddlesome mother was coming to visit for ten days; unfortunately, he'll be in Europe the whole time though...) I actually told him well, that was fine, but I will choose to be out of town as well. He was mad as hell, but she didn't visit, and I don't have to live with the resentment that would've been guaranteed to last a lifetime!
Thanks for the thought-provoking topic.
