    Spot on Kismet.

From my own personal point of view, while it's nice to get 'thank you' posts and I really do appreciate them, I do get a bit embarrased sometimes because I enjoy doing what I do (most of the time anyway ) and get as much out of it as anyone.

I think everyone plays a part and sometimes the big long essays are helpful and other times the short post that someone makes about their personal experience is just as 'convincing'. Neither is more or less needed than the other and comparing them is like trying to compare apples and oranges.

One thing is for certain - big ego's are probably a bit off putting!

    LOL @ Prisca...

What a great post Kismet. One of the reasons I frequent this board almost daily is the vast range of human expressions and experiences.

There's this weird thing with people who are .. familiar? intimate? with each other.... it goes somewhat like "if you don't see things from my point of view and agree, I just can't stand it.... I'll argue my point and badger you for causing me this grief and get things so twisted up that we can't even remember what the issue is....

I read this great book years ago about the circular dances people do (usually family members) because of that uncomfortable tension. I wondered where the "we all must be of like mind" law came from. Flash of insight! What a dumb law!!!

When people I care about don't "get it" when I find myself unwilling or unable to accommodate their - well, whatevers (example that comes to mind: ex-husband stating his excruciatingly insufferable and meddlesome mother was coming to visit for ten days; unfortunately, he'll be in Europe the whole time though...) I actually told him well, that was fine, but I will choose to be out of town as well. He was mad as hell, but she didn't visit, and I don't have to live with the resentment that would've been guaranteed to last a lifetime!

    Thanks for the thought-provoking topic.

They claim they have "saved thousands" from the WTS clutches. But they have probably chased as many thousands right back in for so aptly protraying how the Watchtower depicts 'apostates'. I've heard more than a few say they were turned off by the way information is presented by those considered 'elite' on this relatively small group of WT expatriots.

Ray Franz has no doubt "saved thousands", and CO Jonsson. But what is the evidence these guys have "saved thousands"? You see a post now and then of testimony they provide on their own behalf.
The real scholars don't hang out here. For the average board visitor, it seems the resident clique (who don't seem to be here as much any more) spend more time on the art of smart-ass rebuttal than on substance research, which most people with a search engine, a WTCD or a visit to the TalkOrigins FAQ can do if they desire. When these men do present something worthwhile, does it really seem like the hours they obviously invested for a passe reply to some poster on this board is for anything other than their own ego? If they really want to influence "thousands", why not write a book instead of a post for "thousands of hours" of research? Some might even make a little money to sustain them for their time investment.
How many of them really seem better off and happier than they were? How can they be if they are spending all that time in WT expose without viable compensation other than accolades from a handful of admirers here who blindly agree with anything they say? Seems they spend more time at it than the average JW does in all their 5 meetings and door-to-door service.

"if they are such braindead morons that they can't handle cold hard facts than they deserve to stay in the Borg operating on their one braincell" (tongue planted firmly in cheek)

Just like the Society, there seems to be an answer for everything.

I made the decision to quit the JW's long before reading anyone's essays or books. Some of the research I read at H20 however did re-enforce my decision. It was my appreciation for that research and support that caused me to work as a mod. It was my way of saying thank you.

Looking back a box of chocolates and flowers would have been less draining. LOL

    zero,

    Your name fits you perfectly.

: When these men do present something worthwhile, does it really seem like the hours they obviously invested for a passe reply to some poster on this board is for anything other than their own ego?

Have you noticed its always the people who do no research and post nothing but whining gripes are the ones who criticize and even question the motives of those who do the hard work to educate people?

There's is word for that in my vocabulary: "loser."

: If they really want to influence "thousands", why not write a book instead of a post for "thousands of hours" of research?

Why don't you? Nah, you'd rather just whine.

    To Farkel the winner:

"Whiners"? Now where have we heard that "ad hominem" before? Seems like an unimaginative but popular phrase that about three or four of the board's self-proclaimed "researchers" like a lot. Say one, say they all. I guess we may expect a gang-up of the comrads now.

Let's just say my definition of a "loser" is a little different than yours. As for the rest, you don't know what you're talking about, and you're wrong.

Who was it who said: "Less than zero is a loser"
Oops, now I'm doing it. Sorry, time to quit ...
You win, Loser. (Oops, there I go again.)
