The average JW is not considered mature enough to spend time researching extensively outside of Watchtower publications. However, the writing department draw heavily from external sources, supposedly they are able to subject themselves to worldly material without being affected. Interesting is that quite a number of the writing department fall away from the organization, as listed by books such as Crisis of Conscience.
That the Watchtower contains external quotes is a form of rhetorical fallacy, because most of the writers they quote do not agree with Watchtower doctrine, and so are selectively quoted.
this is up on the org site now
THe last days when?
“IN A little over a billion years, we expect Earth to become a baked, barren, powder-dry desert. It’s hard to imagine how multicellular life could survive,” says a recent issue of the magazine Sky & Telescope. Why? “A brightening Sun will boil the seas and bake the continents,” says Astronomy magazine, adding: “This apocalyptic scenario is more than an inconvenient truth—it’s our inevitable destiny.”
I was always told growing up never to get into Astronomy.
someone in newyork has time to read that magazine when they should be writing a wt article preparing dubs for the big A.
facts.....i am sooo glad they are mature enough to guide us through the perils of outside material........oompa
To follow up on jwfacts comment, those in the writing dept. have been DNA tested for a special gene that makes them immune to the influence of worldly reading material.

Hi, lostjdub93,
If jws are only to read the nwt and watchtower publications, how is it they quote from other bibles and books written by non-jws?
Although your explanation is not completely wrong, it looks to me like the opinion which has a "prejudice" somewhat.
When I was an active Jehovah's Witness, I had about 40 kinds of Bibles.
(Now, those collections of mine increased more.)
Moreover, even now, the Watch Tower society itself is printing KJV, ASV, etc.
The members of Jehovah's Witnesses are "so many men, so many minds."
ok I'll bite. Possible has once again thrown the stink of an accusation by using the word "prejudice" when he should say an opinion has been expressed that does not agree with my opinion. Move on Possible. There is always going to be an opinion that disagrees with yours and u may not be right in your opinion.
I love how the internet allows people to make blanket statements and get away with it in an arena that would normally maul them to death
