Good point, TOTH. And what was cheapest, and they could get a deal through a "brother" who would sometimes dump what was no longer selling well.

I remember when I first went to the AH in Monroe in the 80's......what a nightmare in green.

Bad as they are, the RBCs do tend to keep the bad taste down.

In the Ardmore, Oklahoma cong. we had horrible orange velvet upholstery that was actually done by my father, who learned upholstery while in prison as a CO during Vietnam. The funny thing was that he had done one section of the bolt together chairs in multiple colors (bright blue, green, etc.) to give the BOE a choice of what they wanted. Well, after they made their pick, they left the "choices" section in its awful rainbow colors. I seem to remember it being in the library for a while. Very distracting to give a #2 and have to stare at that LSD trip furniture

This should ID me. Oh Well.

I srsly wonder how people could feel relaxed in a home decorated to resemble migraines and diarrhea.

(I love bright colors when used tastefully.)

Harvest Gold, Avocado Green, Burnt Orange...even the appliances were this color. And if you didn't have wall-to-wall shag carpeting, you were nothing.

Blondie is right. Designers have a big conference/trade show every year or so, and they are the ones that decide what the hot colors are going to be. Remember when mauve and sage green were the 'in' colors? I thought that stage was never going to end!

If any of you watch HGTV, you will notice that 70's colors are back in style. They are just as ugly today as they were then.

My sister likes purple and she had purple shag carpet in her bedroom back in the 70's. The ultimate in ugly.

IMHO, the '70s represent the nadir of 20th century interior design. I believe it stemmed from manufacturers' trying to mainstream the '60s hippie look. Shag carpeting that looked ok for about a week, then got matted and dirty, no matter how often one tried to clean it.

Men's clothing fashions were hideous too. W-I-D-E jacket lapels and ties, and bell bottom slacks. I hated the furnishing and clothing during the 70s and have no nostalgia for them now.

No generation is any better than the previous.

Were the 80s an improvement over the 70s?

Were the 90s an improvement over the 80s?

I have a feeling we'll be looking back on this current decade much the same.
