    Because American culture is all-pervasive.

Ninja got there first with the Proclaimers.

I don't think Lily Allen, from north London, sings with an American accent either. In fact some songs have a distinctly anti-American "accent". (be warned this has strong language)

I do realise this song is anti-Bush and not strictly speaking anti-American by the way.

There is a definite difference when the Americans sing "Hey Jude". Not just pronunciation but tonal quality as well.

When your trained by a dialect coach, you learn that accents come from different places in the mouth. A scottish burr comes from pretty far back in the throat, a proper, clipped london accent comes from right around the teeth. Your typical midwestern/west coast american accent comes from somewhere in the middle.

    Ok - shoot me LOL!!

I reckon its because current musical trends make it easier to sing with an American 'drawl' (no offence intended - I just can't think of another way to describe) than many UK accents.
