Don't unscrew anything. Just use compressed air to blow out the keyboard or you can try using your vacuum. It won't hurt it.

What he said. Compressed air.
And I have THIS KIT: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/485946-REG/General_Brand_59199_Mini_Vacuum_Attachments_for.html
It hooks up to your standard vacuum cleaner (if it has an attachments hose) and lets you get into all those nooks and crannys. Good for keyboards, car vents, down between the seats in your car, etc.

This sounds crazy but it's works really well... Take out the screws and pop the keyboard apart and take out the electronics. Take the keyboard part and toss it in the dishwasher! While thats going on clean the electronice part with compressed air. After it's all washed and dried REALLY dried put it back together.
I wash mine about once a year it's perfect when your done!

For just routine maintenance I use compressed air!

If you try the dishwasher method, don't use detergent or the heat drying option!
Honestly I've never had a keyboard that bad to warrant trying it, but I've heard it works. If you leave enough time for it to dry thoroughly (like a couple days at least), you supposedly don't even have to take out the electronics.

Naw! Just turn it over and bang the crap out of it...literally!

Taking your keyboard apart can be easy for some types of keyboards and a nightmare for others. Some you will never get back together
If you decide to wash it make sure it air dries very very well or you might short it out when you reboot your system
I have taken a couple apart. The first was a while ago so it was an older keyboard. After getting the back off I vacuumed the insides but it was the devil to get all the keys back into the right places so they would fit back into the spaces. Like I said it was very old
The more recent one I had the same problem to a much lesser degree. The keyboard came in modules. I use an ergonomic split keyboard. One module came out as the left hand keys, one as the right hand keys, and one as the numeric keypad. It was a lot easier to put together but I trashed it and bought a new one. Sometimes the keys underneath really do wear out.
The last time I did buy a keyboard I saw one that is built in a way that crumbs and dust don't collect under they keys. But it wasn't the ergonomic split keyboard I use so it stayed in the store
Speaking of taking things apart. I use the Marble Mouse by Logitech. Because of the arthritis in my hands it is the easiest to use for me. Well after about 6 or 7 years my poor mouse died. Well actually I had two - one for the laptop and it died too. Eventually the pads underneath the buttons wear out. It got to the point where it wouldn't work at all so I had to go out and buy a regular mouse until I receive the Marble Mouse by mail - can't even get them on the Logitech website anymore either.
So I had my old Marble Mouse and tried to take it apart - Impossible. I got the screws out ok but there was no way that thing was coming apart without breaking it with a hammer - I gave up and tossed it.

Aren't basic keyboards 10-20 bucks??

beks, exactly... well, the cheap ones anyway. That's why I wouldn't bother doing anything drastic to clean them. Compressed air works great.
If you actually have a filthy keyboard because a cat puked on it, just throw the damned thing away.
