Have you read this book? Mindful Eating: A Guide to Rediscovering a Healthy and Joyful Relationship with Food (Paperback), by Jan Chozen Bays (Author)

mr. rebel8 and I are reading it right now to eat healthier.

I don't need to lose weight but I do need to stop eating so much sugar. I guess I'll go eat a salad. But damn, I really want a hot fudge sundae!

It looks interesting. I have noticed for myself that my poor food choices stem from boredom. I used to eat and drink unhealthy foods and beverages as a way to entertain myself. I've made a big change in my habits this year, but I still find myself drawn to some refined foods with high glycemic loads and fat content, though much less than before. I have learned to prepare healthier meals that also taste good. What would that book say about this?

I was successful weaning myself away from sweets by substituting Splenda or Stevia. It was almost like a withdrawal from drugs or something for a few days. Once the sugar craving is out of your system, you really don't miss it. There are so many things available now with Splenda, even ice creams and chocolates.

You'll feel so much better without the ups and downs sugar causes. Hope it goes well!

I would limit artificial sweeteners. There is much debate as to what is actually worse for you. Moderation is definitely the key.

Mindfulness is a zen technique that is popular in psychiatry these days. We went through therapy that was based on mindfulness. It worked wonders for all of us. Even my Dub husband learned something from it.

I definitely want to read this book.

Just to turn the convo slightly, does anyone notice how easy many sisters put on weight, then lose again, then put on again?

Just as an observation alot of sisters really struggle with their weight. I know many that ballooned after their marriage or first child. I know its not uncommon for that to happen anyway, but do you think the pressure of "the truth" makes many comfort eat?

I was wondering this as thats exactly what I did. Stuffed my face when I the pressure was on (all the time) then throw it all up. I ballooned to over 16 stone regularly.

Since leaving I've lost 5 stone and have control back.

Anyone else notice or experience this?

The book's more about being aware of why and how we eat, enjoying the flavors rather than shoveling it in while you're watching tv.

I eat very healthy-homemade salads and homemade low fat/low sugar granola. Lots of veg, fruit, whole grains. But at 5 pm I just want sugar, sugar, sugar.

Virgo, you're right about the cravings. They do diminish quite a bit once you quit.

How do you like Stevia? I heard it has a licorice-like aftertaste. That might not be so bad. I have terrible pain if I eat Splenda. Stevia is a plant, not engineered like Splenda, so hopefully it's better for you.

Only me, yep, we used it a lot with patients for various issues. It is a useful, non-threatening techniques.

Boyzone, you purged when you were a jw? Or you were just really stressed out?

I did notice almost all the adults had difficulty maintaining a healthy weight. We were booooooooooored. We weren't allowed to have many parties or dance. The recreation was playing Bible games, listening to Kingdumb Melodies and eating, eating, eating.

Every so often a group would join Weight Watchers together.

I had trouble keeping weight ON as a Elder's Daughter Perfect Example Kid, lol. As a teen, I was so nervous being perfect and hating the meetings that I felt like throwing up all the time.

I like Stevia the best. It's super sweet, so a little bit in tea or coffee (1/3 of a packet) goes a long way. I haven't noticed a wierd after taste with Stevia, but I really do with Splenda. You can get used to it fairly quickly if you want to. Moderation is the ticket with anything, but these sweeteners help while weaning away from sugar.

I went on Adkins over four years ago and lost and have still kept off 35 pounds. Stevia and Splenda gave me a boost in the beginning. Now I've modified my diet to just eat healthy and in modest portions. I wear size 4 or 6 and I feel great! I can't really stomach sugary desserts now because I'm not used to them.

My splurge is a glass of Shiraz or Chianti with cheese and crackers before bed. Gotta enjoy life!

Both. Bringing 4 kids up in the "truth" along with a hubby that was a brother but only just. Very conscientious of all the reminders to pioneer, look after the house, stay in submission, study the WT, study with the kids, do field service, read the mags, etc etc...you know the drill.

Life totally out of my control. The only thing I could do was eat. And boy was I good at it! Then of course after eating loads the usual guilt and self loathing sets in, thats when I could get some control back by purging. Always felt better after.

With the amount of sisters I see struggling with their weight I wonder if there's a few more with this problem. In my area, there is alot of sisters that have steadily gained weight over the last 5 years.

For me, the major cure was to leave the Witnesses. It doesn't cure the bulimia but it gave me back control of my life which went a long way in helping me lose the 5 stone and keep it off.

Now healthy eating is so good. There are so many good products out there to help you that I'm really enjoying experimenting with a few ingredients. Spenda has helped with the sugar cravings. Nice on some hot oats with a fat free natural yogurt and raspberries.

No bread or potatoes though, give me gas.

I guess I will try Stevia then! I wanted to but didn't know anyone who had tried it.

    boyzone, congrats on your recovery.
