Has the "Faithful and Discreet Slave" correctly foretold anything?

    Hi donny,

I don't have documentation, but I do recall that the answer to this oft-posed question is, "Yes, once."

The original, putative "faithful and discreet slave," C.T. Russell, foretold the emergence/reestablishment of "Zion." I may not have my terminology correct; however, the writer of the article stated that in this unique circumstance CTR got it right ...

edited to add: looks as if Hammsterbait has the straight dope that eluded me.

    Yes,

They correctly foretold that the organization would beat their fellow slaves saying "my master is delaying"

In revisionist glasses...... according to Rutherford (pre-FDS-class) claimed that 1914's sigificance proved true on Aug 1, 1914 (the date when Jesus allegedly sat down on the thrown) due to the WWI.

Beyond that I can't think of a single thing......

    SBF,

And an agency to try to ensure international order was going to be likely after such a conflict, especially in a world now armed with nuclear weapons.

Not only that, it was already planned and named at the time Knorr gave that talk in 1942!

    From http://www.un.org/Overview/origin.html :

The name "United Nations" was devised by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt and was first used in the "Declaration by United Nations" of 1 January 1942, during the Second World War, when representatives of 26 nations pledged their Governments to continue fighting together against the Axis Powers.

They did foretell peace for after the Second World War and the return of the League of/United Nations in the talk Knorr delivered in 1942, "Peace Can it Last?" It was based on the scripture in Revelation about the scarlet-coloured wild beast, "that was, but is not, and is yet to ascend out of the abyss". Knorr declared the verse was talking about that particular moment in history when the beast 'was not' for a brief period.

I used to be impressed by that.

I was also somewhat impressed by their League/United Nations "prediction." Later on I read many secular news reports written during that era from various sources and most of the "experts" predicted that another organization would replace the recently demised League of Nations. It was an almost certainity due to the growing global economy. After reading a lot of this material, the JW "prediction" lost its luster.

The Hague/ League of Nations/ United Nations

"But in the second volume of Light the League of Nations was associated with this prophetic vision, exactly as Vine had done eleven years earlier. The "scarlet colored beast" (Rev. 17:3) was explained to be "The Hague International Peace Conference," formed in 1899. 14This organization "functioned until the World War. It then went into the abyss and ceased to function. After the World War it came out of the abyss or pit and began to function again in the form of the League of Nations." 15 This understanding was prevalent until 1942 (see for instance the book Enemies 1937, pp. 283ff.), when it dawned upon the Watch Tower leaders that World War II would not develop into Armageddon either. Another interpretation of Revelation 17, therefore, became necessary."

Therefore they did not predict this correctly either. It was said in hindsight to be initially the Hague and then changed to initially be the League.

There is nothing outstanding that they have predicted that they are aware of. Of course like any prophet/soothsayer/reader of stars etc, they have made general predictions that come out right at certain periods. .... Things will get "worse" - which they always do, then get better, then get worse again. .... People will get sick ... there will be famine ....

Ynot - "Rutherford (pre-FDS-class) claimed that 1914's sigificance proved true on Aug 1, 1914 (the date when Jesus allegedly sat down on the thrown) due to the WWI."

You are correct that Rutherford and the WTS claim they accurately predicted 1914 was Jesus enthronement. However, it was not predicted, the prediction was for 1878 and changed after 1914.

"The year A.D. 1878, being the parallel of his assuming power and authority in the type, clearly marks the time for the actual assuming of power as King of kings, by our present, spiritual, invisible Lord...."
