My therapist gets it. She deals alot with individuals who were raised in very controlling religions. It's interesting hearing factoids on other religions that are are conservative or attempt to keep it's members "out of the world".

No, it's not that Steve. I think he was letting me vent for one. But I wasn't able to really verbalize the whole thing either. Too much happened, and I was very disturbed at the time. He was giving me something to calm me so I could speak more, but it seemed to have the opposite effect on me. He sat in silence for months. I couldn't ever figure out why he wouldn't talk much to me

Tyrone, I think the type of therapy you were exposed to is way past its Use By date! Sounds like your therapist is from the öld school of psychiatry" rather than a more cognitive-behavioral and/or skills-based one. There is a definite move away from "talk it all out"therapies to currently coping and living-in-the-now therapies. An excellent resource for people struggling to understand their traumatic experiences and learn practical resources for moving ahead in their lives - as opposed to talking to an impassive therapist - is Babette Rothschild website or any of the Acceptance & Commitment Therapy websites (ACT).

I have to ask if you have received a PTSD diagnosis. Certainly some JW's do have this - the ones that experienced there time as a JW as "traumatic" in that sense. Many others have common diagnostics such as

-Adjustment disorder (a temporary situation - what I was diagnosed with as I sought a counselor after leaving JW's years ago.)

-Character or personality disorders (a long period of skewed perception imbalance in learning to interpret the actions of others.)

If one did have PTSD as a diagnosis then I would have thought your doctor would be prescribing medication and also recommending you see a counselor or social worker. That is what I'd recommend to a friend. Generally a psychiatrist does not spend as long in conversation due to billing limitations.
