Hi,
I was reading the list of Don'ts and Do's for JWs in a recent thread and was slightly surprised by the prohibition of sports.
We are not talking violent sport like boxing or such, just athletics, ball sport and stuff right?
When I thought about it I was not so surprised as my JW friend said a long time back he wasn't into football and I agreed, I am not the greatest fan (although I gladly watch Brazil!)
So what do the kids do at school, sit out and watch? Man that must "toughen" them up :(
What warped biblical grounds do they submit for this? It must be something totally crazy like the Christmas and Birthdays ruling right? No doubt they say sport has "pagan origins" or some bull? Why would Paul draw so many comparisons to athletics if it were ungodly?
1 Corinthians 9:25-27 (New International Version)
25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26 Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. 27 No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.
2 Timothy 2:4-5 (New International Version)
4 No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs—he wants to please his commanding officer. 5 Similarly, if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor's crown unless he competes according to the rules.
Now I am ranting, being a soldier either?! Here's more athletics...
2 Timothy 4:7 (New International Version)
7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
Even boxing gets a look in in the ESV, see verse 26!
1 Corinthians 9:25-28 (English Standard Version)
25 Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. 26 So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. 27 But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.
All the best,
Stephen
