Should the US support space exploration?

If the government had never supported or funded space exploration, do you really think there would be satellites in orbit now?

It is possible. Besides, why did the governments fund the technology? Did the Germans build V2s to advance mankind? What about American and Russian ICBMs?

There aren't even rockets around powerful enough to go to the moon now, much less Mars. The history of man shows him exploring, not for God or mere glory, but for money and the power that money can bring.

A bumper sticker I've seen while running at lunchtime reads:

    EARTH FIRST!

(We'll strip mine the other planets later)

The US Government should get the f*** out of it. And stay out of it.

Instead, private companies should take the lead. That way, we would not be held back by that out of date shuttle that belongs in the late 1970s, and be held in low earth orbit. Not to mention all the procedural errors that start with a small group in Houston--a company that is competently running a space program is going to allow people the latitude to correct mistakes made at ground control, and want to advance instead of retarding space travel.

If Nimrod, for instance, were running the space program in 1963, we would have landed on the moon (and no possible fake landing, either--the real thing) by 1964, and landed on Mars before 1969. And we would be colonizing the whole solar system, and heading for others, as I am writing this. He would have developed oscillating gravity internet as a practical system to communicate at those long distances instantaneously instead of in hours or days, and it would have allowed infinite bandwidth today. But, we have our escargot government running--and dragging--it.
