But... uhm... evaporated cane juice is just a PC marketing term for "sugar".
Okay I'm calling for back-up:

When I was a kid, we would make things with just evaporated cane juice. It would be purchased in big solid blocks and was a brown color, not white. It is called panela.
This is basically it, same thing, just an Indian name.

Other than reducing the juice to solids only, panela is not processed in any other way. White sugar goes through many more steps of purification.
Also, we would chew the cane and spit out the pulp. It is very nutritious and good for your teeth. Chewing the cane pieces cleans your teeth. Sweet and delicious. A favorite drink was cane juice. Fresh squeezed out of the cane and served cold. It is called guarapo. It is very nutritious and refreshing.

That link is wrong. Granulated white sugar is almost pure sucrose that is refined from the cane juice. Evaporated cane juice contains all the other goodness from the plant.

Right you are BTS. I thought about this thread just yesterday while I was grocery shopping as I needed sugar. I have been buying cane sugar for about a year now, as your body is able to break it down better than refined white sugar.
I believe cane juice sugar is better for baking too...its much more fine than regular cane sugar.
Can you buy cane juice BTS? I would have guessed drinking guarpo to be sickly sweet! How much would you drink at a time?
Silentone - In case you didn't know, Jones soda's have cane sugar in them. Their really tasty!

You have to make it, and it is not sickly sweet. It isn't more sweet than a typical softdrink for example, and if the cane was harvested after a heavy rain, a good deal less.
The machine to extract the juice is downpage:

It isn't something that was done at home, but at a corner market/diner.

Thank so much for this BTS. I find all of it very interesting. You can BET Coke would not want to have this show up in the US!
I found a youtube link...some of the Cubans apparently say it is an aphrodesiac? True or urban myth?

I never heard that. Anything is an aphrodisiac if you believe it is. I remember drinking some after a hot day going door to door. It is what I would usually have, in a styrofoam cup with thinly chopped ice. Our anglo-american circuit overseer, a wonderful fellow, loved it.

Irrelevant trivial fact: White granulated sugar is often made from beets, not sugar cane.
Have had cane juice a few times. It's delicious.
