Reading is over-rated

I'm half kidding. Balance is needed. Some reading broadens the mind but too much has a derogatory effect. Arthur Schopenhauer's point (not really brought out above) really is that reading is a poor substitute for original thinking.

Have you ever seen people who just constantly read.

I suppose if I looked up from my books long enough to look in the mirror I'd see one.

I like to just get the movie and spend the rest of my time having sex.

I used to be terribly addicted to reading. My eyes suffered, my brain was compressed, I would walk into walls for failure to look up, and one time I got a very nasty paper cut. Breaking the habit was hard. I had to turn on the TV, but there were temptations. When credits rolled, I found myself scanning them guiltily. When I would get the shakes and need a fix badly, I'd walk into the bookstore or the libarary and just breathe deeply. But this only tormented me and aggravated the cravings. Plus it put me in close proximity to other readers, and you know bad association spoils useful habits and all that . . .

I had to increase my TV viewing even more, walking out of the room when text would appear on the screen. I found that professional wrestling and Jackass were particularly good distractions from reading. I have reached the point where I can no longer even decipher any of the words that randomly flash on the screen, and I consider this a success.

Please forgive me if this post is sloppy. If I go back to read even one word, it could throw me back into a lifestyle I worked so hard to free myself from. I have accepted that I cannot be a social reader.

I am a voracious reader. One can live a balanced life and read voraciously. My reading led to an almost free Ivy League education and law school. The grades I garnered by reading so much enabled me to practice and earn the maximum for a lawyer.

I have thought of your point. Jeopardy is my game. College was competitive in a mostly friendly way. I felt I had to read voraciosly b/c my classmates also read voraciously. I wish there were time to think about the content more. How much time does that take, however? What is the process? Also, I critique my work at this age and education. I am certain my work was fine for my level of education.

I make an effort to balance my reading. A mother superior implored her nuns to always have a novel going despite time constraints and obligations. My reading was very much nonfiction b/c I wanted to move ahead.

Sometimes it felt like a rat race but I'd rather read voraciously than not read at all. I am easily bored and a book is a great remedy.

I have had a most enjoyable winter sitting in front of the fireplace reading and drinking wine. Since I have obtained my BA in Spanish, the books available for me to read has doubled.I have read most of Grabial Garcia Marquez's

novels. I have also downloaded dozens of classics to my iPAD so I always have something to read. I have also spent the winter surfing the web, which is how I found this forum. As I said, I have had a most enjoyabe winter.

People who only "know" someone from a forum should keep their "denial" opinions to themselves.

JWs are antiintellectual. It is no surprise that such an attitude lingers after leaving the Witnesses.

What is to anyone whether another person enjoys reading? This is borderline facism.

Are we also going to dissect where I part my hair or my color of nail polish and foundation?

I enjoy reading. Nevertheless, I would never post that someone who is illiterate is not worthy of life.

    Get a life.

You know BOTR---I don't think you read my post. I know you've read many of my other posts. Hmmmm. I am a WRITER! My post was SATIRE. Did you HONESTLY think I was serious? How could ANYONE take this thread seriously?

    Wow

    Get a sense of humor.

Your satire was so well-written that I could not find it satire. Satire works best when it is obvious. Mort Sahl's satire prob. would not work in print. How does anyone have a compass to determine the unstated and vague intentions of every poster. This is an internet forum. It comes with no clues as to personality or intention.

Perhaps if you made it an even stronger statement or added a smile or emoticon.

I am sorry if I misunderstood. Mark Twain and Jonathan Swift were satirists. If I knew you personall, perhaps I would have realized. There is so much venom on this site. I don't mean from you but I brace myself dealing with many others. I wanted to flee here for a long time but I could not let the other party win. Miscommunications happens frequently here.
