Suspect: Victim depressed and asked to be killed

A Perris man killed last August on a forestry road in Lytle Creek was depressed over being shunned by his congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses and asked to be shot, the suspect told sheriff's detectives.
Authorities arrested Fidel Beltran, a 28-year-old construction foreman, less than a week after interviewing him twice in the death of Baraquel Alonzo Cruz.
At a hearing Thursday in Fontana Superior Court, a sheriff's detective testified that Beltran willingly spoke with them and admitted to shooting Cruz with a 9 mm semiautomatic handgun.
The 54-year-old victim was shot once in the head and died on the road.
"Mr. Beltran told us that Mr. Cruz had been depressed," Detective Jon Minard told the court. "He was having some family problems."
After listening to testimony, Judge Douglas Fettel determined there was sufficient evidence against Beltran and ordered him to be held over for trial on murder charges.
Beltran told sheriff's detectives that Cruz was upset because his family and friends did not want to associate with him anymore, according to Minard. Cruz also had a court case and did not show up, he said.
However, searches conducted online for San Bernardino and Riverside superior courts revealed no court cases for Cruz.
Defense lawyer Edward Lopez later said Beltran is a gentle man, who is smart and has never been arrested before. He was the youngest of his construction crew and had worked his way to foreman.
"He's not the prototype of a killer," Lopez said.
Beltran is scheduled to return to court May 21 to enter a formal plea on three counts: murder, criminal threats and dissuading a witness or victim by force.
