Socialism can be best compared to you having two cows, the mayor comes in and takes one of your cows and the cows of everybody who has more than one cow, milking the cows until they're dry, not being able to feed the cows since the government knows little about farming and in the end, the government gives everybody in the community a a pound of hamburger, a pack of brats and a pack of American cheese.
Capitalism can be compared to you having two cows, then selling one of those cows and getting a bull, selling the bull's semen and then impregnating your cow about 4 times, creating more possibilities milk and beef before you slaughter the bull for steak and selling your steak cheap for quick sale. The "poor" are hired to do the cheesemaking and meat proccessing because you're too damn busy trying to feed your milk cow and its calves to proccess the meat. The proceeds from the sale of the meat go to pay your meat proccessors and cheese makers, who in turn, get a skill and make their own butcher shop and cheese shop.
Of course, some unscrupulous businessmen will try to introduce Chinese made cheese and beef, but in the end, only the extremely destitute would want to risk getting Estrichia Coli and your astute marketing department at your farm will sell that to the public.

You republican/capitalists, the fight w socialism was lost 50 yrs ago, when your country sided w communist russia, preserving it in the face of germany's attack. Since then, socialist/communits theory has spread far and wide all over the globe. China, of course is the biggest example. But, it has a hold on many countries, both in the east and in central/south america. Also, there are influential/intellectual groups in many countries that are pushing communist theory, political correctness being one flavor.

It's too early to tell if Obama will be a one-termer. However, Obama seems to govern a lot like Jimmy Carter in many ways and he was a one-termer, so who knows? Wait and see.
