I love the sympathetic way the Black characters are treated by Ms. Lee; there used to be a doctor in my town who was the personification of Atticus Finch.

I read that Atticus Finch is cited often as the reason people choose to become lawyers. Evidently, Alabama has even erected a statue in his honor. He's a very interesting character, although his view on guns is ridiculous.

I really liked the book--it held my interest for every page, and that's a bit rare. The narrator was an adult voice though, and didn't quite jive with her being a young girl. I suspect the author used a child as the narrator in order to express the racists views of the time while still distancing herself from them and developing sympathy.

I haven't seen the movie, and until I read the book, I had no idea what the story was about.

The movie had an adult narrator, the child reflecting back on childhood memories.

You are correct. However, the dialogue of the book is not the dialogue of a six year old. Furthermore, especially in the courtroom scene, no young child would be able to recollect years later what was going on and understand the proceedings. That part is highly unrealistic.

I never really thought about that, John. I haven't read the entire book. I just assumed the narrator was remembering all the events of the book.

    Hi Syl:

Glad you're better. This is for you, regarding Mary Badham, my favorite character in To Kill a Mockingbird.

    CoCo

After 39 years, Mary came out of retirement to play an offbeat cameo opposite Keith Carradine at the urging of actor/writer/director Cameron Watson for his film Our Very Own (2005). Watson stated he would not accept any other actress for the part. Mary has since indicated that she won't close the door on other acting assignments that might come her way. Watson managed to track Mary down in Monroeville, Alabama, where she had been invited to attend a stage version of "To Kill a Mockingbird."

Lost the "supporting actress" Oscar to another child actress: Patty Duke for The Miracle Worker (1962).

Still keeps in touch with fellow _To Kill a Mockingbird' co-star Phillip Alford. Had remained close to Gregory Peck until his death in 2003 and Brock Peters until his death in 2005.
