Actually there is some good evidence that whatever it was exploded well before it hit the ground. Trees at what appear to ground zero were left standing upright - a phenomenon also observed with telephone poles at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This is consistent with both exploding meteors and something else. Whatever it was it was big, it caused aural displays in Sweden and barometric fluctuations around the world.
