Well, I wrote this in response to a similar thread over a year ago. I still stand by it.

I work in an elementary school. Last week a teacher gave direction to a child in a kindergarten class and he yelled to the teacher, f#%k you!

    Well, what do you think?

What do you think of the parental values in this child's home?

Do you think this child had been taught any respect for others?

What are the prospects for this child's future?

If you talk to your boss using foul language, what would he do? Bet you don't do it, because you realize it would be disrespectful.

How about customers in a business-do you adress them using swear words to emphasize your selling points? Bet you don't because you realize it would be disrespectful.

What would you think if your child's teacher called your child a few choice words? Would it be O.K. with you?

Do you use these words at home so that your children use them?

What has happened to old fashioned respect for yourself and others?

It is called having good manners. Most of us learned good manners when young. Using this type of language is considered bad manners, and is very offensive to many people, myself included.

I will say that I suppose if a person has hurt themselves, or is startled, momentarily that person may possibly be excused for a lapse in judgement, depending on the company.

But overall, a use of bad language in public has always been associated with poor upbringing, or lack of respect for others.

I might add that in the elementary school that I work in, the boys sometimes call young girls very nasty things. I imagine that they've heard the words from their older siblings or parents. How would you react if someone called your little girl some choice nasty sexual words?

I would tell my daughter to ignore it but if it continued I would contact the school (if this has been happening on school grounds) to arrange for a meeting with the school officials and the parents of the offending party. If it happened off the school grounds, I'm contacting the parents. I have no control over whether the other parents will be agreeable but I can help my child to understand that she doesn't have the problem.

By the way I do at times cuss in front of my children but I do not call them foul names nor do I allow them to cuss. Double standard? No, I'm an adult...

I've learned to say "can't", it takes some time son, but soon it will come naturally!

Not at all classless. Makes you less of a door mat!

Thank you for posting that Quandry, I was beginning to think no one felt that way anymore.

I guess I am old school because nothing sounds more uneducated and low class to me than someone cursing just for the effect of it. Who really needs to put the word "Fuc**** in front of a word to prove a point? Just the thought the word conjurs up is enough to keep me from using it..

I too find it disrespectful. No matter who is doing it. Adult or child.

Want to disguss burping and farting in public now?

oh yeah, lots and lots of swearing. But I have been trying to tone it down a bit because I saw a woman recently break out into a loud bout of cursing because she was frustrated about something and I realized how ugly it was. So, trying not to do it so much. At least not loud angry cursing. Regular cursing, well, yeah I still do it.

I let a choice word go occasionally to express my frustration, but I don't use profanity in everyday speech. I got young kids.
