Using Firefox instead of Internet Explorer will greatly reduce (dare I say "eliminate") the possibility of getting infected like this when you browse the web.

    Especially if you use NoScript.

Thank you everyone for your imput. I guess I need to get an online back of my junk and then figure out how to reinstall windows on my own, ey? This is awful. This virus. What jerks. They should put them all on an island together with no internet access, one they cannot be voted off. I am at the library, which only gives me and hour of internet and it's about up.

I thought the "Geek Squad" was gonna do that for you? Reinstalling Windows is not in itself too hard; the challenging part may be getting all the hardware drivers. Who made your system?

I mean if it happens again, Doc. Yes, they are reinstalling as we type.

What are all the ways you can get it?

My computer got it and it completely shut us down. Not good for business at all!

    To protect yourself:

Run a current antivirus/antispyware product that is keeping up-to-date with malware definitions. I recommend Norton AntiVirus 2009 -- great product, Norton really cleaned up their act with the 2009 version.

Use an alternate web browser. Internet Explorer can run ActiveX stuff (unlike other browsers), but that's also its Achilles heel. Many forms of spyware infect your system through that attack vector. I recommend Firefox. The only site that I have to use IE with is the Windows Update site, since it uses ActiveX components.

Configure your system so that it installs Windows Updates automatically and regularly.

Don't download software or open attachments from unknown or untrustworthy sources. Use discernment with popup messages; don't automatically approve them.

I'm so happy I got rid of Windows. I used to be able to clean off viruses, trojans & spyware with very little trouble. Everyone got me to work on their computer. The last infection convinced me that there's almost no point in trying to eliminate today's trojans. Format & re-install is much easier (unless your computer didn't come with a CD)
