This is a great example of JW's using double speak to achieve their own ends...
Remember, the GB believes that they can lie when it comes to their dogma where bad publicity is concerned.
So its a personal decision... Only because one agrees to personally decide to agree with the GB upon baptism.
If a local elder says that, its because he is lying, or under instructions to lie. Nothings changed... Who shuns their parents for switching religions? No one outside of JW's... duh!
I hate this cult on some days more then others....
Good idea, AsilentOne. Actually, it's a paste from Blondie's Comments from her post yesterday. I'd be glad to send an email to the reporter but it would be second-hand from me.
How about it, Blondie?

Yes, Hamsterbait. . .Every decision an individual makes is a personal choice.
I never understood why JWs have to be told and reminded over and over, verbally and in print, that "it's their personal choice/decision".
As the recent WT article on shunning shows, it might not be a personal decision at all.

The WTS for legal purposes presents the following (perhaps others) as a "personal decision."
1) Taking a blood transfusion
2) Not joining the military
3) Shunning df'd or da'd jws (includes all jws not just family members)
Behind the scenes the WT has unwritten rules (or buried deeply in the WT publications or ones forbidden to the rank and file)
There was an study article where the WTS warned the rank and file not to say, the Society says, when answering questions about their beliefs.
*** w98 3/15 p. 19 par. 4 Living Up to Christian Dedication in Freedom ***In order to avoid misunderstandings, Jehovah’s Witnesses try to be careful about how they express themselves. Instead of saying, “the Society teaches,” many Witnesses prefer to use such expressions as, “the Bible says” or, “I understand the Bible to teach.” In this way they emphasize the personal decision that each Witness has made in accepting Bible teachings and also avoid giving the false impression that Witnesses are somehow bound to the dictates of some religious sect.
The Society should put it as 'The Bible now teaches'.
