I've given the matter a lot of thought...

    Saint,

A thread in last year's The West Wing Christmas show (or was it the year before) was about one of the characters (Toby) doing something to help a homeless man remember his deceased brother, a veteran of the Vietnam War. Toby went way out on a limb to help the stranger, but was compelled to go forward regardless of the consequences. It was a very touching thread on the program, which concluded with a playing of The Little Drummer Boy.

"I did my best for him..."

I came very near to bawling like a baby. I've always LOVED that song. I think IT'S the best one. Sorry for being so wishy-washy, y'all.

I like the Pops rendition of "O Holy Night" (98 degrees has nice version too with good harmony!)

Feliz Navidad from where the only real white Christmas is down on the white sandy beach!

Oh man! There's so many I love. Nutcracker Suite. Ever hear "NutRocker" by Emerson, Lake and Palmer? Love that one. Also, Father Christmas by ELP. DAMN I love the Brits for their musicians!

*sigh* - even as a rebellious Irish Catholic teenager - and continuing to this day - I don't like the vast majority of xmas music.

    Manheim Steamroller is cool though.

    My thoughts exactly, detective.

It's a sad song. It makes one think of Christmases of long time ago, better in memory than they actually were in fact; and hopes of seeing people we love that are no longer around but wish they were, facing the painful reality of not seeing them at all.

Still, the final line says it...

    "Have a Merry Christmas NOW."

Seize the moment. That's all we can ever hope to do.

    Make the Yule-tide gay,

Does this mean that, according to the JW and their teletubbie homophobia, the yule-tide is purple??

This is my favourite Christmas song ever:

    Fairytale Of New York
By Shane MacGowan / Jem Finer (1987)

    It was Christmas Eve babe
    In the drunk tank
An old man said to me, won't see another one
And then he sang a song
    The Rare Old Mountain Dew
And I turned my face away
    And dreamed about you

    Got on a lucky one
    Came in eighteen to one
    I've got a feeling
This year's for me and you
    So happy Christmas
    I love you baby
I can see a better time
When all our dreams come true

    They've got cars
    Big as bars
    They've got rivers of gold
But the wind goes right through you
It's no place for the old

When you first took my hand
    On a cold Christmas Eve
    You promised me
    Broadway was waiting for me

    You were handsome
    You were pretty
    Queen of New York City
    When the band finished playing
    They howled out for more
    Sinatra was swinging
All the drunks they were singing
    We kissed on the corner
    Then danced through the night

The boys of the NYPD choir
    Were singing 'Galway Bay'
    And the bells were ringing
    Out for Christmas day

    You're a bum
    You're a punk
You're an old slut on junk
Living there almost dead on a drip
    In that bed

    You scum bag
    You maggot
    You cheap lousy faggot
    Happy Christmas your arse
    I pray God
    It's our last

    I could have been someone
    So could anyone
    You took my dreams
From me when I first found you
I kept them with me babe
I put them with my own
    Can't make it all alone
I've built my dreams around you
