I love to live a simple life ... but for me simplifying life starts with relations ...

I cut off completely all people, who are complicated or want to make my life and my feelings complicated .... As a result of this, there are only 2-3 JWs who are allowed into my house, I do not answer most calls and mail from JWs, we changed KH with my wife and in the new come just to accompany my wife twice a month... I do not start any new friendsips in the new KH...

Life is so simple now ... no more guilt feelings ... no more emotional blackmail.... great ...

I think that this is a concept made up by people who lived in simple times. It's true that we can over complicate things in our lives through poor planning, or dysfunctional behaviors. But it's also true that our lives are complex because we have grown as a species. We know more about science, health, human psychology. We need to remember that the Bible was written two to four thousand years ago! They just had less to think about back then. So I know give a lot of credence to this simple life stuff. I'd rarther have all the things that we have today and screw the simplicity.

JW definition of "simplify your life": Quit your job, find a part-time minimum wage job to replace it, live at the poverty line in a dirty hovel, and pioneer.

I think simplifying your life is also about attitude and how you live based on your personal circumstances. I don't need a brand new nice car, go out to eat all the time, latest gadgets, or the newest of everything. Oompa, you've been at our house, and besides our relatively new minivan and our HDTV, most things are not the latest & greatest, and many things including furniture and clothing we got used.

So we get a lot of things used, and if things break, many times I fix them instead of replacing. Most of the time I do things myself instead of hiring someone to do things for me.

This all helps with peace of mind. Less to worry about, and less money spent meaning financially more peace of mind too.

And yes, I am truly happier this way than trying to keep up with the Jones'.

I don't agree. People are people and have been emotionally complex for much longer than 4000 years. This is pretty obvious when you read some ancient literature, including the Bible.

Daniel, while I agree with you in regards to emotional complexity, I also agree with Truth... 200 years ago roles (both gender & societal) were clearly defined, today it has become less defined and more chosen. 200 years ago If you were a peasant serf, you knew what your role was; work like a dog til you keel over dead one day, you had no aspirations for greater things in life, if there was shelter, enough food, and family, then that was the pinnacle of your existence. Today we are inundated with choice and encouraged to attain more, materialism has become the cornerstone of western society, and ultimately I think this is the result of the industrial revolution. (just my opinion of course)
