However, the witlesses have no idea of where the goal line is. They are expected to just keep going and going--they are stopping now because they are way past the 100 yard line, way past the goal, and no one has yet announced the touchdown.

    Good point, WTWizard.

My husband, a big football fan, (he used to play in high school, defensive end) is laughing at ineptness this illustraton. Players pretty much KNOW how much time they have left on the clock before they go out on the field, and so no one would be stopping at the goal to check the time.

So, the situation he's proposing would never happen. I've been watching football for years and have never seen anyone do what he's describing, it'd be unbelievably idiotic.

As someone mentioned above, football players know where the goal is, and they know what time it is on the clock. It's nothing like human beings like waiting around for Armageddon, who have neither one of these facts.

Does the audience who listens to this stuff never stop and analyze it at all?

Analyzing what is said requires the ability to think critically. Thinking critically, at best, is considered nit-picking, at worst it is full-blown apostasy.

In general, the higher-ranking the person speaking, the more he gets away with. A 12-year old (or worse - a sister) using this illustration in a TMS talk would get a "W". A GB member using the same illustration gets 10,000 heads nodding in unison, sustained applause, and several thousand people telling each other "Whoa - that was so deep!"

In JW land, "deep" means "I completely didn't get it, but I don't want to admit it to anyone else."

LOL sir82! I can't tell you how often I'd leave a meeting or a convention thinking, "Man, what a crappy metaphor or illustration that guy gave, made no sense at all!" when most everyone else was raving over it.

But, I always was being accused of "independent thinking" by the Witnesses. Mea Culpa!

I'm sure that illustration wasn't in the outline...I thought veering from the outlines was highly discouraged now...well, maybe not if you're of the GB, huh?

I think I saw Leon Lett do that in the Super Bowl with the Cowboys.

He's stopping, confused because the coach is running a long next to him yelling:

"Your're at the 10 yard line!

You're at the 5 yard line!

You're at the 1 yard line!

    You're at 2 feet!

    One foot to go!

Oh, wait, this is the ten yard line not the goal line...

You're at the 9 yard line...

So once again we are hearing that some brothers have 'stopped' and are examining the 'clock' to see if they really need to be 'running'...........

So much that it warrants attention at the DCs........

    I say.... WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD!......OH YEAH

Given how often these players change their jerseys into different colors, how they make the goal line on the opposite end of the field and then switch back, how they change the rules from one play to another, and how they drop players and rotate new ones in, it would amaze me if they even knew which side they were playing for any more.
