The reasons why religious icons such as these look other worldly is because they are supposed to. They are said to represent the saints in heaven, thus the surreal look.

As for the hands, certain gestures mean a benediction or blessing. As for Paul's gesture, I am not familiar with it.

Jesus laughing pictures... look at the people in the background that all seem disproportionate. I mean, WTF! Are these guys cavemen or something? What does this mean??? Did cavement worship Jesus as a single deity?
