    Dear Dairy,

    I really miss you.

It's not that I'm lactose intolerant. I love milk and cheese and yogurt, but I think my longtime overindulgence in your creamy, delectable offerings has made me whey too full of congestion and has added to my already ungainly avoirdupois. An old friend worked at a health spa in Scandinavia a half-century ago and said that goat milk is a complete, healthful food. Is that so, DD? I was formerly of the misguided opinion that dairy meant bovine products only. It seems, however, that the designation refers correctly to all animal milk products. I'm given to understand that seal milk is the richest of all milks, but if I got my hands on any of that I'd turn into a walrus. I called the local health food store and made an inquiry. They referred me to some sister store on the North Pole. Calling all huskies, yours truly excepted!

Another friend told me that cow milk is poison, but I miss it so much. I don't smoke. I don't drink. What's so horrible about a milk-fixation? Ahhhhh ... Cheese. Yogurt. Sour cream. Whip cream.... I'm repeating myself. Is goat milk off-putting to the nose and palate?

Please, Dear Dairy, answer my prayers!

I love feta cheese! Especially with Kalamata olives. I use both sparingly on salad.

I don't know about drinking goat milk, though.

    Dear Dairy,

I'm going on my evening 4-miler now, but I'll be ruminating wistfully over feta cheese and kalamata olives.

Keep your eyes on the road, MW, keep your eyes on the road....

    Milk Weed?

If you can't get blood from a turnip, can you still get milk from a weed?

Ah, Cameo ... the question of the ages!

There are about 60 species of milkweed in the United States, and they grow in all 48 contiguous states. The name of the milkweed came from the sticky white latex juice, which is in all parts of the plant. The juice was used by the Native Americans to help solve lactation problems in nursing mothers, and by early settlers as a glue. This photo shows the flower buds at the top of the milkweed plant and open blooms below.

    Dear Dairy:

I remember as a child we had Neopolitan ice cream. Can I still buy it?

    Chubby

    Dear Chubby:

NEOPOLITAN ICE CREAM: a tricolored, three-flavored (usually cherry, chocolate and pistachio) Neapolitan ice cream virtually unknown in Italy today but still made in the United States, where it was introduced in the 1890s. (The American term "Neapolitan" for vanilla, chocolate and strawberry tricolored ice cream is based on its former identification with spumoni.)

Enjoy, but go easy on thirds!

I seem to be managing quite well without milk, except for cream in my coffee.

Have you outgrown your need for milk? If I have a question on any given subject, is it really necessary to start a new topic to elicit comments from readers?

    Thanks!
