Thanks guys food for thought. Part of my problem is that I started writing this one with a good beginning and a great ending. My problem has been keeping my reading circle interested in gettng from point A to Point B. I'm going to sleep on it and see what I come up with.

I agree. Some secret, or proof your character had the religion is really a sham. The secret could be anything -- violence, sexual, money/greed; literally anything. You could do a lot with your story from this angle. And then it could lead you anywhere as well.

Is there anything (not necessarily true in the case of the WTBS - use your imagination) that could scare them that much?
Off the top of my head (and depending on where you want to the story) -- donations being used to run drug operations in a foreign country, or the religion is really a front for religious terrorism, or the religion is a front for satanic/pagan worship involving human sacrifice.
Possibilities are endless.
