At one time didn't they actually offer the book sales as a way to make money as a job or part time? I thought I remember reading something about a woman who made x amount of dollars selling the books and blah, blah..... You didn't necessarly need to be a member or believer? anybody else remember and advertisement or possibly an article for this? Maybe it would have been in a Golden Age pub? hmmm...

    And yet ...

"The remnant of spiritual Israel are now out to preach the truth which is in God's Word. And so we are proclaiming the good news of his Government, and we have renounced a deceitful tongue. We are not peddlers of God's Word who misrepresent their product in order to deceive their customers and make sales for self-enrichment at the people's expense." - w50 10/1 p. 352 par. 10 'Droop Not Your Hands'

    Hmm.

    (Good catch, Farkel. Hilarious.)

Barbara Anderson told me some years go that while she was researching in Bethel, she discovered that Watchtower leaders were not veryl interested in the history of their movement.

    Now you can see why!

A more contemporary quote from 1930:

"The brethren have been charged with the breaking of the Sunday law or with selling goods and merchandise without a license.

40 To be sure, these charges are false, but they are made just the same; and those against whom they are laid are reminded that Jesus also was falsely charged. He also says to his faithful ones, 'The servant is not greater than the master. If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.' None of the Lord's workers are peddlers in any sense. These workers are not doing a commercial business at all, and surely none that is in any wise in competition with anyone else. Everyone who loves the Lord and serves him delights to welcome everyone else to engage in the same thing. They are not attempting to make money, nor seeking members of an organization, but are devoting themselves exclusively to carrying out the commandments of Jehovah." - w.30, 12/15, p.376, 'His Campaign'
