While I was working outside on a customer's house,a Witness handed me a tract inviting me to this summer's assembly. He handed me the invite, told me what a nice job I was doing and left.

I read that the summer convention was about 65 miles from where I live. When I was a Witness driving 65 miles would of been no problem. But,handing out invites to non-believers and expecting them to drive 65 miles away attend is insane. I can't imagine anyone that is not a Witness going. When I attended the summer conventions, they were all local.

Does anyone know why they would choose a location so far when local locations are available? Can renting local facilities cost that much? Or,are contributions so down that renting facilities further away save the WTS money?

I have always felt this was stupid and when I did the track work the last time I felt so dumb saying you are invited to attend but it is 3 hours away or 150 miles. Everyone at the door just looked at me like had I lost my mind are you kidding me you want me to drive 3 hours to hear a one hour talk from some religion that they felt was nuts anyway. I was like well we are in this world wide work and I just wanted to get away. Nice that I am not doing it anymore.

They want to get people to do things like that. That makes them look like s*** in the community, so they will have that much harder a time functioning outside the cancer. All the while, it wastes their time so they don't have a chance to do what they really like doing (like, perhaps, looking online to see whether they are really in the truth or not).

I remember when I was little-before we had the assembly hall-the little conventions were at local high schools, later the local fairgrounds. We have one assembly hall that I know of in WW-about 2 hours from my house. I feel bad for the locals having to go so far for those lame one day special conventions. You KNOW it is just taking valuable time and resources away from the house2house work:)

The question was posed in one of the talks at the convention, and the reply given was that in handing out the invitation, a witness was given; so whether people choose to attend or not, they have been given the chance of hearing and reacting to the Bible's message.

I don't suppose they expect non-believers to travel 5 miles, let alone over 60. I think that as they've handed out the invite, their conscience is good as the onus is now on the non-believer.

I don't think assemblies are 'advertised' to the public in England ...a tad off topic - churches here have notices outside their establishments advertising the forthcoming Sunday service. So do the Christadelphians, who also run an advert in the local paper. Yet there isn't a notice outside my local Kingdom Hall advertising the ''PUBLIC talk''

What I hate is the guilt ridden illustration of how a Witness indures a jungle, rivers gangs, whatever to get to the DA and then they end the talk with: "Oh and by the way this sister is 85 years old" Baaaarffff

In Scotland the convention is held in the town of Perth. That's around 45 miles from Glasgow. However, it's closer to a day's travel from some of the most northern parts of Scotland, and if you live on any of the islands, well, it's probably going to take you more than a day to travel south to the convention site.

So, JWs in Lerwick, be honest, how do you feel about these convention invite campaigns?
