Should scare the crap out of those religious folks still stuck in the 5th Century......pregnant women are told to stay in-doors to prevent "defects" and Hindu leaders predict "calamity" when the two great fighting Demons "swallow the sun."

It's 2010 soon people wake up! And the Ganges is NOT HOLY DRINKING WATER!

They shouldn't worry. If they have a few earthenware pots and a hammer, the evil causing the darkness will be chased away.

The demon-swallowing-the-sun myth as aetiological "explanation" of solar eclypses is pretty common in ancient cultures.

The same motif is echoed, according to some scholars, in the Old Testament, i.e. in Job 3:8 (see Theodor H. GASTER, Myth, Legend and Custom in The Old Testament, New York, Harper & Row 1969, pp. 878, 888; idem, Thespis: Ritual, Myth and Drama in the Ancient Near East, New York, Harper Torch Books 1966, pp. 228-9; Luis I. J. STADELMAN, The Hebrew Conception of the World: A Philological and Literary Study, Rome, Pontifical Biblical Institute 1970, pp. 21-2).

I just saw the eclipse earlier today (I'm in China right now). Unfortunately it was all through cloud clover (even heavy cloud cover), but I saw nearly the whole thing -- including totality which is the most amazing, eerie, sublime thing to see with one's two eyes. I was shocked that I even got to see the corona through the clouds, but a minor miracle happened with the thickest clouds rolling out just in time to see it. I took a ton of photos and video....if you ever have a chance to see a total eclipse, please go do it. A 99% partial eclipse won't do (I know, I saw one in 1991).

Aww Leolaia, I'm so jealous! I, like purps, would love to see your pics. I know it's not nearly as spectacular, but I saw a partial one once (97 or 95% totality? something like that) and the weirdest thing was the crescent-shaped mottling effect projected through the trees.
