Legalize pot and tax it, that should get things rolling again for California.

I just read this post this morning. This is awful, those parks on the list are little gems in cali. How can you close the West Coast? Is the coast guard going to be out there or homeland security checking to see if you have entered an area that is not under their radar. How can this be enforced? Sheesh, can you imagine getting busted for going into a state park that was closed. HAHA

I guess Arnie is choosing the ones that he feels won't detract too much from tourism. I love McKerricher on the coast - the walking trail is beautiful and the scenery is awesome. Closing them means locking the bathrooms up, probably removing all the wooden walkways along the ocean and just shutting it up. I have to believe that he focused more on parks used by locals than tourists. He also has 5 of the (I think) State buildings for sale and a bunch of other stuff - today should be the vote and I guess we'll know exactly what he'll cut once they release the final details.

Oregon has some beautiful coastline and so does Washington so that does leave other options for vacationers...sammieswife

Hey sammielee!---don't know if you will look at this thread again. Had my two cups of joe and looked at that list again. Some of those parks are ran by volunteers!!! I know this because I have been there. They are going about this the wrong way. This stupid reasoning is going to send the vacation crowd to the other parks where they will get turned away because the park is"full". Don't those fat cats in Sacrameto understand that with the economy the way it is that people are staying in their local area and camping or doing day trips? Wait a minute---when was the last time those people actually went to those state parks and camped? Yeah right. They all probably stay in the fancy resorts or lodges. Arnie can afford to vacation anywhere in the world and somehow I can't imagine his wife and kids tenting or staying in a R.V

Must have more coffee. To those that can stay in the fancy resorts I don't mean to offend, they are wonderful. I just don't think this is a good idea.

The above is sort of old news, in that no one really takes that "closure list" seriously. It's a case of Arnie causing a panic among State citizens to raise the pressure for legislatures to reach a deal. My local County BoS made a statement that in the event of the State closing their parks they would try to reach a deal with the State to manage the parks themselves. But it looks like it won't even come to that. Here's a newer take:

Some California State Parks likely to close - Lawmakers vote Thursday

Following months of deliberation, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and leaders from both parties announced late Monday that a 'deal' may have been reached to close California's $26 billion dollar budget gap. The proposed deal must still be passed by a 2/3 majority of both houses. These votes will likely occur on Thursday of this week.

The impasse, giving rise to this most recent overdue proposal, was that republican lawmakers refused agree to raise taxes to solve the budget crisis, while Democrats fought to retain services, including health care for low-income children.

The details of the budget 'deal' were, apparently, struck in a closed door session lasting late into the evening on Monday. These leaders declined to release the details of the deal until they have an opportunity to brief their respective party caucases. They did, however, disclose that some state parks will have to close, but the vast majority of the 220 initially scheduled to be shut down will remain open.

An Assembly staffer explained today that in the event the current proposal is passed, the California State Department of Parks and Recreation will be alloted a certain reduced budget. Faced with this reduction, the department will then undergo a cost vs. benefit analysis as a means of deciding which parks will need to be closed. It is possible, according to this staffer, that this process will take months.

The following parks were initially slated for closure by the governor: California State Capitol Museum, Governor's Mansion State Historic Park, Leland Stanford Mansion State Historic Park, State Indian Museum State Historic Park, Sutter's Fort State Historic Park, D. L. Bliss State Park, Donner Memorial State Park, Ed Z'berg Sugar Pine Point State Park, Emerald Bay State Park, Empire Mine State Historic Park and Kings Beach State Recreation Area.

Maybe Arnold ought to see if he can't tax churches, they get off and away with a lot, especially the jdubs, no real community charity. maybe thats what Arnie should check into no real charty, then taxation plus.
