MEMPHIS, Tenn. - If you build it they will come.

A West Memphis congregation is now a believer that it doesn't take an expensive contractor to get a new building -- all it takes it faith and a lot of hard work and determination.

In just 9 days, a Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall was built in West Memphis. It sits across the street from the airport. It's nearly 6,000 square feet: with a large entry way, large meeting room, a library and 3 bathrooms. Every member helped to get the building up in 9 days, even the women.

Mary Brown helped feed the crowd of workers saying, "My role was to skin the chicken."

More than 500 Jehovah's Witnesses from Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee volunteered their time and expertise.

Ernest Thomas worked on the building; he says the congregation only paid for supplies.

"The concrete was the most expensive", Thomas says concrete alone cost nearly $150,000.

The Congregation formed a Regional Building Committee, or RBC, to organize the massive undertaking. The RBC as other Jehovah's Witnesses from other states to pitch in and that's all it took to get their brothers and sisters in the Lord to help out.

Thomas says organizing the mass number of helpers was key to getting it done on time, "we did not have anyone bumping into each other."

The congregation just had it first service inside the new building last weekend.

As I understand it, the problem with the two-day halls was in not allowing enough time for the concrete to cure properly.

Even the women helped, huh? Skinning that thar chicken was hard work! What a gender appropriate job. The WTS serves the Lord in making sure its women know their places. No women in pants in our halls, no siree.

Truly, Jehovah is speeding up the work in these last days.

Armageddon is as near as the door (since 1879)!

I also heard that there were structural problems with the Two Day halls because the wood framing did not have enough time to properly dry out. This resulted in the wood shrinking after the construction finished causing the structure to become weak.

I wonder if Memphis has done anything with the Assembly Hall they have.

It was pathetic, the last time I was there the wallpaper was peeling off the walls in the main auditorium.

None of the drinking fountains worked.

Parking was horrible and it's in a very bad part of Memphis.

Many people assigned to Memphis for assemblies were going elsewhere when I was still going in 2005.

My mother, who lives in Missouri would not go to Memphis as her congo was assigned there as well.

The District Conventions have been moved away from Memphis to Pine Bluff, AR~ a small city outside of Little Rock.

Kudos to them for having decent place to go in a decent area of Memphis.

That's why they call them Quick Builds now and have for some time officially....no longer 2 days. The last hall I helped build was in 2000 and it was called a Quick Build. Some work was done 4 weekends in advance, such as the concrete work, putting in the sewer system, electric, and water.

I wonder if some of these kingdom halls would collapse in a moderate earthquake or get blown away by a modest hurricane.
