MEMPHIS, Tenn. - If you build it they will come.
A West Memphis congregation is now a believer that it doesn't take an expensive contractor to get a new building -- all it takes it faith and a lot of hard work and determination.
In just 9 days, a Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall was built in West Memphis. It sits across the street from the airport. It's nearly 6,000 square feet: with a large entry way, large meeting room, a library and 3 bathrooms. Every member helped to get the building up in 9 days, even the women.
Mary Brown helped feed the crowd of workers saying, "My role was to skin the chicken."
More than 500 Jehovah's Witnesses from Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee volunteered their time and expertise.
Ernest Thomas worked on the building; he says the congregation only paid for supplies.
"The concrete was the most expensive", Thomas says concrete alone cost nearly $150,000.
The Congregation formed a Regional Building Committee, or RBC, to organize the massive undertaking. The RBC as other Jehovah's Witnesses from other states to pitch in and that's all it took to get their brothers and sisters in the Lord to help out.
Thomas says organizing the mass number of helpers was key to getting it done on time, "we did not have anyone bumping into each other."
The congregation just had it first service inside the new building last weekend.
