Things that cause illness, depression, and other things that end life prematurely are evil. They break down society by shortening life spans so making society function at a minimum, if at all. The breakdown of the family unit of ancient Rome was why that society broke down. Whatever caused the breakdown of the families is what was evil, sociologically speaking. Everything we value is viewed as building up society. It's all about survival. We have a natural inborn desire to live and prosper and propegate the species. Anything that goes against that is evil. I believe it has nothing to do with the god of the Bible, but rather evolution or reincarnation or something.

when one takes pleasure in doing harm to another, it is evil.

people will do bad and hurtful things to others but I think the element of pleasure makes for EVIL.

Frankie, You hit it right on. Not all societies are the same. Some need some things to survive and others need other things to survive. It depends completely on the needs of a culture at certain times. Lions will be friends during times that there is enough food. There is also the mental illnesses and selfishness and power mongers who THINK they need that stuff and who make others' lives miserable because of their perceived need. They get survival and desire mixed up, I think. I love this thread!

Purps: You mentioned a very important element that may mean the difference between being bad and being evil, and that is pleasure. We studied this in Violent Crime in college. Thank you for mentioning it.

There is no evil, and there is no good. There is only hurt and heal. Hurt is perpetuated by those who are hurting (or perhaps defective in some way?) and good is perpetuated by those who are healed or healing.

Over-simplified, to be sure... but that is what I believe. No one is purely evil. No one is purely good.

I'm certainly not unbiased but I will give my personal definition

An adult who lashes out his uncontrollable rage on a small defenceless child.

A man who uses a child to satisfy his sexual depravities all the while ignoring the human in his hands.

Anyone who looks intot he eyes of their victim as they punch, hit and beat someone smaller and weaker then they are.

I have looked into the eyes of these men and it is very hard to find anything good in them
