OOMPA- Now you're talking ! Way to go ! I re-connected with a high school friend I had not talked to in 30 years ( made a thread on it ) and it was like he and I were still best friends ! He plays in a Beatles cover band on the side on weekends and totally understands my exiting the witnesses . I apologized to him for not inviting him to my first wedding back in 1979 to a JW woman ( who didn't want " worldly " friends invited ) and he was so nice and understanding. We talk on the phone every few weeks now !

So Oompa- this move on your part is a good thing and will be a catalyst for you coping with exiting the witnesses as time goes by. Good for you ! Keep it up

    Yep, FB is awesome!!!

I've reconnected with so many people from High School. It's funny how much we've all changed, yet have remained the same! lol

Congratulations on your reconnecting with past friends.

Unfortunately I lost contact with all my high school friends after becoming a JW. Maybe the future will open that door again.

Hey Oompa, is it common for JW teens to break off the worldly friends after graduating high school? Is it like, ok to hang with them, while you're still in high school, but considered a lot worse once you graduated?

Too long to go into, but i'm interested in this because of a personal situation.

    thanks

aunt bee.........a lot of us jw kids were wild as hell in school........it was the only time we could be REAL.......many of lead a double life, but still dont want to disappoint our folks.........

i remember saying to myself...."if i can just get through school without getting caught or dfd, that i will settle down and be a good dub"........i was so "bad" that i did hurt my parents some........so of course i pioneered for a year as pennance!!!!

i LOVED school and my old friends........but one you are not with them every day, it was easy to just drift away from them...of course most of them all went to college and stayed in thouch like NORMAL PEOPLE!.........oomps

Aunt Bee, I can give you my take. There is not much hanging out between most JW high school students and non-JWs. Outside school activities are very limited, with most JWs I knew not being allowed to do anything outside of school with non-JWs. After graduation, most people go to college. If a JW doesn't go, then most kids don't want to hang out with such a "loser." And there is just not much they have in common (or the JW wouldn't be allowed to do it). Most kids have boyfriends/girlfriends in and after high school. Most JWs don't, or if they do, it's because they are planning on marrying, not just dating. Also a lot of college kids get involved in experimentation of some sort, whether it be drinking, drugs, sexuality, or whatever. Since a JW is not allowed to do so, there isn't much reason for the two to hang out. But maybe the biggest thing is that while in HS, a JW kid could be still included by others because they figure it's because of the JW's parents that they are a JW. After HS, most kids can move on and make their own decisions. Not so with JWs. Once kids assume that a JW is a JW by choice, and they learn a little about the religion - they really don't want to be preached to or be friends with someone who would let their kid die by refusing blood and will never celebrate holidays with them.

But to directly answer your question about being "allowed" association with people after high school. The simple answer would be no - they do not love Jehovah, and so would not "good association."

I can't speak for JW kids today - they seem to be more liberal and worldly-friendly than when I was in school - but going by my generation, yes it was pretty common. And, for the most part, they didn't even hang that close in school. We were constantly bombarded with counsel about "bad assoiation spoils useful habits" and anyone not a JW was bad association.

Personally, I only kept up with one friend after graduation and then he got married and I never saw him again. I had zero interest in keeping up with people that I couldn't relate to, or who didn't like me. High school was not a fun time for me. I was glad to be shut of it...and most of the people there.

I almost hit "submit" and then remembered that I did run into one guy years later that I was friendly with in high school. I ran into him in field service. We caught up with old times and then I used our 'friendship 'status as a 'in' to try to study with him. I made several return visits and he finally got tired of me bugging him and told me to blow...what a douche I was...
