    AK Jeff....

I have done merchandising in stores, mystery shopping (yes, its legit and can pay well), retailer compliance audits and more.

Haven't done any in awhile, but generally you need a computer, internet connection, printer (to print out materials/instructions), digital camera, email account and transportation to the jobs.

I stretched my unemployment quite a bit with it. Turns out I was too honest in my reporting...my 1099 (IC) jobs were not considered "wages" for purposes of income for unemployment benefits....so I could have left that off and gotten more unemployment until I found out differently...however, your state may differ, Illinois did not at the time.

I have a couple of websites if you are interested. PM me (or email me, I think you have my email addy).

I would be very wary about any MLM type programs, legitimate or not. First, many of them are in fact scams. They might have you buy membership to a product, and then have a scheme to have you selling memberships to others. A typical scam is to have a tree where you have to grow both sides in order to make money--and all your work goes only on one side of that tree (you don't make a penny). If you see anything you do not understand how you get paid, it may be a scam. If you are good with diagrams, draw it out on paper and see if there is any way that you could get downlines and sales and still not get paid. If you can find even one such way, they have already done so and that's what they will do. Even if you do not find it, chances are they have found it and will use it to bilk you out of getting paid.

There are MLMs that are a bit more legitimate, though you are likely to pay money upfront and/or buy a continual line of products. Herbalife is among this group (if they corrected the sales tax calculator--late 2006, I found that you have to fill in the sales tax for your own state, which may not work if the product is going to a different state). What normally happens is that the upline will hype the opportunities, and tell you to hype up the quality of their products (which is not usually that great). Herbalife, as an example, has products that may be health food store grade at inflated prices (and you are to mention that they are better). Notably, Herbalife had a catalog that did not display product size--you don't know whether you are purchasing a 6 ounce bottle or a 10 ounce bottle until you buy it (rather poor service).

What usually happens, even with the better MLMs, is that you will make crap money. They would have you believe you are going to make $30,000 a month on their program. But, you are going to be spending most of your time (sounds like another organization you know?) selling products. And, usually they want you to spend money building distributors (that's where most of the money is supposed to be coming from). How much time are you actually going to be spending developing downlines and/or selling your products (which may be no better than GNC or Vitamin Shoppe) versus the pay you are likely to get? Note that the best distributors are likely, in the real world, to only get more like $1,500 or $2,000 a month for working more than 60 hours a week selling products.

If you need to spend money upfront, buy a continual supply of products (and fair warning: some of these can be extremely difficult to cancel autoshipments and billing for if you ever want out later), or spend most of your time recruiting downlines, chances are good that you are going to have trouble making very much money. And, with the depression in progress, you are likely to be either losing money or getting only a few hundred dollars a month at best, for long hours of very hard work. And that's if you can negotiate all the obstacles and there are no "scam trees" to build, which never build to give you any money.

AK-Jeff... have you looked into 'work from home jobs' which may not necessarily be classified as strictly 'online jobs'. What I mean is there are some customer service type jobs that can be done from home if you have a phone and Internet access. I believe Rogers in Canada has this available (a friend of mine was talking to their Rogers CS person and she said she works from home and loves it). I imagine the U.S. has similar companies. There are other work from home jobs too. My SIL has done court document transcribing from home for lawyers in the past. There are data entry jobs too that may combine with Internet if applicable.

Also... has she or the 2 of you considered starting her/your own business?

Wow. Thanx everyone. I mean it.

I am still sorting thru your ideas and suggestions. Much of what you have mentioned we were aware of/tried that or rejected it at one time or another. Still, we are looking back at old trails again to see if we missed something that could work. The general economy is the biggest culprit of course, as some things that would work well during fairly solid times don't work well in poor, cut-back to the bones economies. Or they are deluged with so many people trying it that it is glutted and unprofitable. We found a few attempts on E-bay to be like that. Everything we sold there was bought, but there is so much on there, that unless you find a good niche there is little or no profit. Still, I consider that a very viable possibility if we find the right product niche.

My wife is submitting the Uhaul app today. Perhaps. We'll see. She has submitted hundreds of online apps over the past year with little response in most cases - probably also a victim of a glut of job seekers. Still, we are leaving no stone unturned right now.

Home based businesses are tough, especially with no front money to get them going. This area is not exactly attracting customers to new businesses either. Still as mail-order type business might work. Same issues as Ebay I suppose. Find the right niche. We are not marketers and get lost in the vastness of that.

I will continue to comb thru your suggestions, with deep appreciation.

    You guys are great.

    Hey Jeff:

Would she consider doing house cleaning jobs? If you're good, you can make a pretty good buck, or at least that's the way it is around here. My sister has a woman come in once a week to clean. Takes her about 3 hours and my sister pays her $65.00. This woman is booked solid because she's gives really good service, is honest and reliable.

If she's willing to do this, here's what I would suggest: go to Staples and buy some blank sheets of business cards. Make a ton of them up on your computer (you should be able to find a free template for business cards on-line). Make sure she has her name, telephone number, email address and address on the card. Do it in colour if you can---looks better.

You can distribute them one of two ways: either literally door-to-door (ya, I know---but hey, it's better than offering the WT), or, you could do up a bunch of flyers, go to the Post Office and you can get them delivered to a certain area of town for relatively cheap. I'd try to aim for a nice part of town where people tend to have more $$$.

All she needs is one or two responses and the rest can be word of mouth. If she's willing to do this, tell her to charge by the job, not per hour. She'll make more that way.

All the best in this, and let us know how it goes.
