Just a simple statistical question on the blood issue -

I was driving to work Monday and the local oldies rock station had on a public service ad for the local blood bank...mentioning a Dallas lady who had to have an emergency Caeserian Section, but they were able to save both her and the baby. It required several units of blood.

It set me to thinking - what if???

What if the entire United States were placed under JW "Theocratic" law and every single person was denied a blood transfusion option? In fact, such blood transfusions were declared "Theocratically Illegal" and no blood reserve was even available?

In such a case - I was wondering - about how many Americans would die each year from simply bleeding out after injury, surgery, or severe disease? How many surgeries which we now think nothing of would be refused by doctors because they thought the patient might die on the table without the blood option?

And lest anyone think this little thought exercise is silly - let us remember: The wonderful board of directors (GB, faithful slave) of the WTBTS would do exactly this if they had the power. And, they really, really want this kind of power.

Good question. And the answer is: 4.5 million Americans are saved each year because they take a blood transfusion.

Over a 10 year period, that's 45 million lives that are saved----more than the entire population of Canada. I don't know what the figures are worldwide, but if no one were allowed to accept a blood transfusion anywhere in the world, it would be catastrophic to say the least.

Thanks Mary - BTW where did you find that estimate? If we had a really credible source (maybe even a link) it would be a powerful statement to give to the witnesses who had never thought of the real facts about blood.

Not to say that it would get through to any of them, but still - 4.5 million preventable deaths (just in the U.S.) per year!!!

Such is your theocratic war-god YHWH according to his slave-politburo.

Is that 4.5 million transfusions or 4.5 million probably saved from death?

Not every transfusion is a case of life or death.

    Just curious...

Not every transfusion is a case of life or death.

Doctors do not give out blood transfusion unless they think it's needed. Doctors follow transfusion indicators to aid their decision to administer blood. When you are low on blood from a slow loss of it, organ failure can be the first thing to happen. The first organs to "die" from lack of blood are the kidneys, heart, and brain. Yes, you can live without functioning kidneys, but you'd be on dialysis which takes an incredible amount of time and complete change in your lifestyle. You can also have a heart attack from lack of oxygen to the heart or a stroke from lack of oxygen to the brain.

If you are losing blood fast, you can go into shock that is irreversable. The onset of the shock means that even if the doctors administer blood; there is nothing that can help you.

One doctor explained to me the decision to transfuse like this. The body losing blood is like a speeding car headed to the brick wall. The doctor has to make a decision on when to apply the brakes (blood). While the doctor knows many variables about the body/car to make his decision (blood levels, age of person, loss rate/age of tires, condition of track, distance from wall), the doctor never knows all the variables (condition of inside vein walls, heart condition/level of brake fluid, etc.)

The doctor is trying to balance the risks of blood...with the risks of waiting to administer blood. He's super wary of organ failure and shock.

    JWoods,

If you think dubs give a shit about anyone else other than themselves, you'd better think again.

It was just a fantasy thought exercise, Farkel. But maybe at least the trolls will read it here.
