Blacksheep good point! Some Elders told me that it just appeared the sun stood still, and the bible doesn't need to say the earth stopped moving...yet they qoute "There is one dwelling above the Circle of earth hanging it on nothing..." Claiming the this verse is being scientific.

And remember, the Bible doesn't say time stopped, it doesn't say the earth stopped turning, it says the sun stood still.

Well...again we have the account written from the perspective of someone who didn't understand the solar system. The sun doesn't revolve around the earth...so as far as the solar system goes, the sun never moves to begin with...it's the earth that is moving around the sun. So for the sun to "stand still" it actually means the earth stopped revolving around the sun. I'm not a scientist or anything but I'm sure that the effects of the earth stopping in mid-space would be catastrophic...

    hi chris

Yes I do, one thing I know is if people from another century could see us using mobile phones or TV they would be thinking we were miracle workers. God did miracles that would still seem so to us and so I have to assume that God works on a greater plain of knowledge that we are not on, like we would seem to those from another century. Maybe it was as simple as just making the sun appear to stand still for those that needed it.

    God did miracles ...

    Prove what miracles he did.

It has to be proven that God (if he exists) can do any miracles before you can assume that time stopping is in his bag of tricks.

I think one of the JW "Evidently" type of explanations is that he put a big glowing yellow ball in the sky that looked like the sun - from the perspective of Joshua, it looked like the sun stood still.

Whenever I heard that explanation, I used to wonder, "umm, wouldn't Joshua have noticed the real sun continuing to sink? And for a time there would have been 2 suns instead of 1?"

But as reniaa said, "it's a miracle - believe it or not". Either God did a big magic trick, or broke all of the laws of physics for 24 hours, or, maybe, it's just a legend.

The controversial writer Immanuel Velikovsky wrote a few books that went into a ‘plausible’ explanation of the biblical myth that the earth actually stood still.

Worth a read and he puts forward very interesting evidence from other peoples myths that it was not just that the sun stood still, but also that it stood still on the horizon in certain parts of the earth, as well as other writings that claim that there was an unusually long night, all apparently around the time of biblical Joshua.

Controversial but a very interesting read for anyone who is interested…..

It seems like it would have been just as effective to give the people night vision. That way, there wouldn't even have been much of a fight. Just total slaughter.

And God wouldn't have had to **** up the whole spinning of the earth thing, which affected everybody on the planet at the time, not just the fighters.

Better yet, slain soliders could have been raised as an undead army and nobody could have stood against them.
