Just curious -- what's the difference between Roman Polanski and Alex Kelly? Kelly was not famous, fled to Europe to avoid rape charges and was villified on serveral news programs for fleeing.

Why should Polanski be treated and thought of any differently?

Alex Kelly was charged with committing two rapes in Darien, Connecticut, in 1986. Before his trial was due to begin in 1987, Kelly fled the United States and spent the next seven years on the run, mostly in Europe. [1] Kelly's parents allegedly financed him during this seven-year period, although they may have been unaware of his exact locations. Law-enforcement authorities suspected this was the case and, on at least one occasion, raided the parents' house in an attempt to find evidence of Kelly's location or their assistance to him. No legal action, however, was taken against them. [2] Because Kelly was on the run in Europe, he missed the funeral when his older brother died.

In 1995, Kelly surrendered to authorities in Switzerland just as his passport was about to expire. He was extradited to the United States in order to stand trial on rape and kidnapping charges. Several lesser counts were excluded, as they were not specifically listed in the extradition treaty between the two nations. [3] Kelly faced two trials in 1997. After the first was declared a mistrial, the second resulted in his conviction for the first rape and a sentence of 16 years in prison. [4] He pleaded no contest to the second rape. [5]

"I know it wasn't 'rape' rape. I think it was something else, but I don't believe it was 'rape' rape," said Goldberg, dismissing the possibility that Polanski had forced himself on anyone.

"He pled guilty to having sex with a minor and he went to jail, and when they let him out (on bail, pending sentencing), he said, 'You know what, this guy's going to give me 100 years in jail. I'm not staying.' And that's why he left.

Whoopi has been on the record of supporting victims of child abuse but when its her friend??? Incredible.

What's next? They approach the President to save their friend from this injustice?

Disfuckinggusting. Nail his balls to the floor and set the house on fire (as my grandfather would say). Why wasn't the mother prosecuted too?????

And as far as you guys talking about California, are you kidding?? You are aware of the horrors that happen in other parts of the country aren't you? You are aware is was a California court that convicted this loser? If you want to ask what's wrong with some region, ask about France or Belgium where the author of that HuffPo article is from. (Big Tex there's lots of good stuff there, the format is like many others now, multiple contributing writers)

The are reacting in the same exact way that Democrats have reacted to Kennedy and Chappaquidick. Apologists.

That's absolute bullshit Burn and of course, as usual, you know it.

The police are good at putting criminals in jail, that is what they do. Polanski paid a settlement to the girl he injured. In many countries it is called a payment for loss of honor. Not much can be gained now after 30 years. Let him appolgize, maybe spend a month in jail and lets be finished with it.

He also had a relationship with actress Natasha Kinski when she was 15 and he was about 40.

Umm, maybe because Polanski lied to her, and she was under the impression that her daughters friend was going with, and Roman manipulated that situation? Maybe because her mom brought charges against him?

I don't give a shit about "other countries" and how they buy off the victims. He ass-raped a little girl. There was no "loss of honor" to her, she didn't do a fucking thing wrong. A month, my ass, he should be shot.

Whoa Avishai, I understood that the mother was angling for a part for the daughter, and facilitated the whole thing. Any mother who would let the thought of fame and fortune outweigh thier mothering instincts is even more disgusting than the guy in my opinion. And yes, he should be shot.
