The box in the photo (from JW's on flickr) doesn't even say what the contributions are for. They covered it up.
They can use the money any way they want to. (Really nothing new)It might be the "Pedophile Lawsuit Settlement Fund" when they peel the tape back.

LOL - OTWO, I was thinking the same thing before I even opened this thread!
How about the 37 different funds and contribution boxes at the KH?
This fund, that fund, the poor people dont even know which box to put the money in, so they put it in ALL of them!!
I used to HATE doing the accounts because it was so DAMN confusing!
Worldwide Work - Pedophilia Lawsuit Fund
Local Congregation Fund - Give More Money to the Pedophilia Fund
Kingdom Hall Building Fund - Build more places to raise money for the Pedophilia Fund
Next Contribution Box Idea - "Worldwide Pedophilia Lawsuit Settlement Fund"

Back in my younger days, these were highly-coveted positions for young JW ladies. They practically fought over these spots. (1) This was one of the few "privileges" women were allowed and (2) it was the ideal way to be seen by the fellas without seeming like they were trying too hard to be seen.
It's pretty sad when I think back on it. I remember the stories a lot of these teenage girls told of being hit on at the contribution boxes by creepy 30 year old brothers. Oh, good times (not!).

They want to advertise that no collection plate is passed. As long as they don't pass a real collection plate, they can mention to new ones that they do not pass collection plates. In the meantime, they hand out pledge forms if they really need money (such as for a new Kingdumb Hell or A$$embly Hell), and they give talks that people are not donating enough. I have even heard the ones where they turn out the lights and read by flashlight, threatening that they will have to do the whole boasting session like that unless donations are increased.

WTW, while I was "in" I never thought of that. They always said "No collection taken" on the handbills and always said words to the effect that no collection plate was passed. So a bowl would be okay, or any kind of contribution system where a plate was not passed.

So they can have something to say "We are the true relgion because we do not have a collection plate..."
That's part of my dad's laundry list. My reply? "Dad, having a contribution box is just fine for you little cong of 60 people. Would not be very efficient for the church I go to with well over 300 people converging on a small box."

IsaacAustin, I have been to plenty of A.A. meetings where they pass a basket. I suppose they could say they never pass a "plate" too.
Anyway, I never felt forced to put money in. It is not a true sign of the true religion- box near the doors or plate passed or basket passed.
