It is a fascinating subject. The end result will be indefinite life extension. This company has the key patents. They've had to partner with a leading Chinese stem cell scientist to form a joint venture over there. This tells you something about the effect of regulation in the US.
They can take cells from your body and turn them into pluripotent stem cells. These can be turned into any tissue. With telomere extension, they are also physiologically young. You can reboot your tissues and have the cellular age of a 10 year old.
The beauty of these induced iPS cells is that there are no ethical dilemmas. These are not embryos. Embryonic stem cells are obsolete for therapeutic purposes.
ISCO is another, using a different method that requires unfertilized egg cells. I believe Biotime's technology is superior because any cell can be used, but ISCO may have some short term advantages with their parthenogenic lines.

The goal of the project is to demonstrate that a combination of new nanotechnology based therapeutics can be used to "make young again" moderately-aged large animals that are genetically similar to man. The experiment will be considered successful if it doubles the animal's lifespan and decreases its chronological age by greater than 40%. Mr. Sarad is currently seeking the support of university partners, collaborators, and benefactors to help meet the program goals of rejuvenating three adult animals by mid 2011.

I'm thrilled with the degree of success thats being had with inducing skin cells into pluripotent cells. This will eliminate the problem of the body likely mounting an immune response against the transplanted cells because of having a different MHC.

As a trained cell and molecular biologist, my observation is that researchers are not aiming to immortality, and even if tried, it will not be achieved because cell apoptosis pathways (programed cell death) are largely a mystery, and it affects neighboring cells -including stem cell grafts. Certainly the current research on stem cells has had incremental successes and i believe it has an unlimited potential to cure many diseases and improve the quality of life, not to postpone death. For those involved, it is a historic time to be involved in such research.

Agree with Gerard. Especially this approach has great merit, and apparantly without any ethics issues for anybody of sane mind.
We should, of course, remember to be very careful to not expect way too much way too quickly from this research.
Ironic if perhaps the anti-embryo view in fact enhanced the development of this method? -

They have supercomputers that can read DNA at a millions of sequences per second,,and new types software that can help decipher it which are no doubt getting better all the time. Human ingenuity, I'm sure big breakthroughs are coming down the pike probably faster than most of us can imagine.
As a side thought it seems all this information about DNA that will becoming more and more known gotta spell trouble for the WT because the DNA evidence supports Darwinian evolution. Looks like the information age is gonna steam roll the WT and a whole lotta other fundy religions.
