The UN and YMCA

    The UN and the YMCA,

According to the WT, the UN is the scarlet colored beast of Revelation with 7 heads and 10 horns and religions that cooperate with the UN are the harlot that rides the beast. Now, despite this belief, the Watchtower and Bible and Tract Society decided to take a ride on the beast for ten years. Funny thing, when people found out and pointed out their duplicity, they immediately resigned.

Now through all these years, the JW children could not go to the YMCA because of the name, Young Men's Christian Association. Why? Because of the name "Christian" in the name. Can't associate with other religions after all.

Let me give you a little history of the YMCA. It was founded in England in the early 1800's and attempted to help the down and out through charity and religion. The idea spread to the U.S., where many people were helped through Christian charity. In 1933, the YMCA stopped its religious efforts and devoted all of its resources to social service. In the U.S. today, it is the largest nonprofit non denominational service organization. What does the YMCA offer? A place for the young to play sports. A place for young mothers to get help with problems from abusive husbands. They offer educational programs and many other social services.

When I was a boy, I went to the YMCA. (My JW mother was not a stickler for details.) I have good memories of those days. Swimming, playing ping pong, just having a good time. Never once did I see a religious service on the schedule. Never once did I see a chapel on the premisis. Never once did the subject of religion come up. So, the JW kids in the central cities can't go to the YMCA because of its religious influence? Bull Shit!

    It all fits.

Same reason that you can't celebrate birthdays. Anything that would take the attention away from the WT is taboe. That little bit of attention one day a year is against their strict laws. Same with the Y. You have to serve the WT 366 days a year. If you don't, then boom! These are the most selfish bastards to walk the face of the earth.

    Cello,

I don't know where your remark is coming from. I went there as a boy to go swimming with other hererosexual boys.

    Hello Larc,

I often wondered at the WT hypocrisy on this issue. You are correct., of course, about the YMCA taboo for JW boys. At the same time, the WTS would rent YMCA facilities in which to hold baptisms for local Circuit Assemblies (this in the days before Assembly Halls when Circuit Assemblies where held in school gyms or similar places).

My little boy BS detector’s alarm was going off when I saw this practice, years before I faded away.

I remember my mother wanting to join when she was twenty something, and my father threw the worst temper tantrum. Apparently, it was as bad as taking me to hell for a coffee and crumpets with Satan. Their logic never fails to astound me.

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples:

"The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses'
seat. So you must obey them and do everything they
tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice
    what they preach.
They tie up heavy loads and put them
on men's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift
    a finger to move them.

"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites!
You give a tenth of your spices--mint, dill and cummin. But you
have neglected the more important matters of the law--justice,
mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter,
without neglecting the former. You blind guides! You strain out a
gnat but swallow a camel. "Woe to you, teachers of the law and
Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and
dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. "Woe to
you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are
like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on
the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean.

In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous
but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.

    Larc,

Your absolutely correct. All my sons used the facilities of the YMCA to hone up their sports abilities, and at little cost to us.

They beat the dubs hollow when it comes to helping others.

I'm sorry I just have to lol @ cellomould, larc.

The song in the 80's, YMCA, by a gay group has left me always laughing at the reference to the Y as a place for gays to meet. Don't take it personal! I'm sure cello didn't mean you, but was just joking. :) j2bf
