I was looking over the December 1 watchtower, the one for the public. On page 8 there is an article called THE APPOINTED TIME IS NEAR.Is is a small article on all the events of the last days. All the scriptures. But not a word about 1914.I heard a while back that 1914 may just start to fade from the literature.Did any one else see this article?

I don't think 1914 is going anywhere soon.
Remember the Watchtowers dated the first of the month are the "public editions". The wackiest, most cultlike, or most ridiculous doctrines are not going to be in there, or at least are going to be well camouflaged..

These articles are designed for the non-jw public. It is possible that they don't want to confuse them with the 1914 teaching too early.

what about a count of 1914 in publications over the years.....there are probably far fewer mentions in recent times

A search in the CD Rom reveals:
1914 in Watchtower (by decade)
50s: 900
60s: 895
70s: 600
80s: 831
90s: 493
00s: 197 (through 2008)
Looks like a pretty clear decrease over the last couple decades to me.

Perhaps they are waiting for 2034 that would be 120 yrs, like Noah's time, from 1914. Then the WT society also could say that, according to some biblical rule, the time had been doubled by Jehovah's mercy, namely it is almost exactly 60 yrs from 1914 to 1975 and from 1975 to 2034.
Time flies...

no, they aren't waiting. 1914 is the last "date" doctrine and will die as older witnesses die.

They can't just drop it without an alternative. The GB's authority rests upon the 1914 establishment of the kingdom. It's the load-bearing Ace in their house of cards.
Stretching to 2034 might be seen as an option for them but I'm sure they expect a huge decrease in numbers in 2014. The 100 year mark is a psychological barrier that many long-time JWs won't be able to get past. I've set it as my fade deadline, myself. (Note: I know it seems long but I have a LOT of family to get out before I go.)
What would be great is if they DO set another date, such as 2034, and then the end comes within a year or two of announcing their new delay doctrine. That would be poetic.
