The real "story" here is that dubs just don't keep up with the Mother ship. When I was a dubling (new dub) it was common knowledge among us that "no trespassing" signs didn't apply to us. We weren't trespassing, we weren't peddlers, we were on a Mission from God. So we happily ignored any and all such signs. Then sometime in the mid- to late-90s Mother sent out a letter saying we should start paying attention to these signs expecially if the community or complex was gated. This was either new light or evidence of a lawsuit, depending on how blind your faith was. In our territory, this shut down access to several apartments, condos and even whole (gated) neighborhoods. I remember it well because there were many complaints about how little territory was available to work. We had talks on Thursday night about not "hogging" the territory cards but to turn them back in quickly so others would have doors to knock on.
The woman in the news story clearly hasn't kept up with advancing light. This is not uncommon. Before I left (and this was probably one of many reasons I left) it was pretty clear that the vast majority of dubs had not advanced in their "theocratic" learning since the day they got baptized, which was the same day they stopped reading the magazines, studying for meetings, and keeping up with the whole "wheels within wheels" chariot that was spinning out new "present" truths on a monthly basis.
There were countless examples of this, from the elder giving a talk on blood transfusions who had no clue about the many "outs" the WTS had provided for JWs in the past two decades to the examples long-time dubs used in field service that were no longer official policy or doctrine.
Most dubs read and study enough to get baptized, then they begin to coast. For them, dubdom is not an intellectual endeavor. It's a social club in which membership requires that you simply follow - all the thinking will be done for you. That's why she could stand in front of a judge and say "I didn't see the signs because I was driving" with a straight face. She really didn't "see" the signs, because she was trained to block them out. What she really meant to say was the signs didn't apply to her. But who's going to tell that to a judge?
