I know it sounds crazy but I am having more fun with this than any other hobby.

    I joined Cornell University's: http://www.birds.cornell.edu/pfw/

The fights between the squirrels and Jays is hilarious to watch, and I get new species every day. I finally put out food on the ground for the squirrels and they are dive bombed by the birds, making them jump with about 3 feet in the air with surprise.

The birds and squirrels have become so tame they don't panic when I come out to fill the feeders. In fact, they seem to wait for refills!

Anyway, just a silly post for nature lovers.

I also have a whirl the squirrel bird feeder, which the squirrels have learned they can't feed from but if they whirl long enough they can get some bird seed thrown to the ground. Its just too funny. I'Ve posted a link before but for others who haven't seen it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NocRG3r2zBw&feature=related

I'd like to have a bird feeder but there are too many cats in the neighbourhood. Of course I could take care of the cat problem with my crossbow, but I don't want to get arrested.

I am a bit of a Twitcher. I love birds of prey, they way they hunt, the way they fly and in some cases they way they survived despite persecution. In the UK they are all protected and we habe seen some big increases in the populations of Buzzards, Peregrine Falcons and Red Kites. Unfortunately some species are still declining such as Hen Harriers and Barn Owls.

Then there are the song birds, these are in may cases declining in number due to changes in farming practice. One of the fastest declining species is the Skylark, once a common sound if not sight in our countryside. Last I only the song on a few occasions.

Now that i am spending less time attending meetings and annoying the neighbours I am going to focus more time to this hobby and get involved in conservation activities.

    Finally Free,

There are plenty of stray cats in my neighborhood....and I have one myself. Birds are smart....you know that.... owning one as a pet!

Between the squirrel warnings and the bird warnings, mine doesn't have a chance. I use to have an African Grey, and he loved when I would set him outside in his cage to watch the birds. It was like he was part of the group. He'd mimic all the calls.

It would be fun for both of you!

    Cantleave,

I am fascinated with Birds of Prey too. We have a falcon or hawk of some sort, but I have not been able to identify him yet. He calls almost all day long.

We also have many vultures, and I think an eagle. At night, if I go out with my dog I have heard owls, and felt the rush of their wings go past. There is no sound....but there is no question an owl has just swooped.

Have fun with the birdwatching! So much more relaxing than attending meetings!

We have one of those fold up charts that shows pictures of birds that are in the county where we live. I find it amazing that there are over one hundred types of birds in this heavily populated county. My wife can really get into bird watching. Recently we were up at Halfmoon Bay and ran into a large group of bird watchers with all their bird watching gear. I was worried my wife was going to run off with them.

Haven't they had articles in the Awake on enjoying Jehovah's creation while out in service or some such nonsense?

There's a pond outside my living room window and I sit here often watching the birds. There are many, but my favorites are: the snowy egret, the great blue heron, red-winged blackbirds, and the lesser bittern. I could watch the herons all day, I just love the way they move. I used to live where I saw bald eagles and osprey all the time, but don't see them here in Oregon as much, or not where I'm at.

It's really cool sometimes first thing in the morning in late fall and winter when I'm taking my dog out, the foggy mist will be twisting around and all of a sudden hundreds of canadian geese will come honking in, a huge wave of them, and set themselves down in the water for their breakfast.

    It's infinitely fascinating to me.
