(hate posting this under 'entertainment' because the movie - though old - speaks volumes about "Reformist" mentality and the hypocrisy that frequently accompanies it...)

I absolutely LOOOOOVE this movie! A young, beautiful Joan Crawford whose acting really knocks your socks off! Walter Huston's pompous, smug, self-righteous reformer is DEAD on!

Just thought I'd post it and see how many ex-JWs can identify with the attitudes and behaviors shown in this movie. A good portrayal (by Joan Crawford) of how a person falls under the spell of a charismatic (read: cult leader) preacher, and how she ultimately has her revenge...

I see a lot of symbolism in the Reformist preacher's (Walter Huston) demand that Sadie (Joan Crawford) go to prison for a crime she didn't commit in order to make a 'sacrifice' to 'god'... (as Sergeant Mackenzie points out to Sadie, it's prison or her whole life ahead of her...)

Puts me in mind of all that JW converts are asked to give up - college-education, good financial future, ability to think for oneself and make one's own decisions, freedom from the petty, nit-picking mentality of a bunch of "old-maid-mentality" Gov.Body members and congregation heavyweights, etc., etc.

As opposed to entering the 'prison' of the Watchtower. Somebody on this board (?) does something to the effect of "The Watchtower's Dungeon"?? Good mental imagery.

Hope you enjoyed this little presentation. Zid

Ah, this excellent movie has FINALLY been re-posted to YouTube by another user!!!

As I mentioned in my OP, this movie speaks to those who have been in a cult, especially women, and it displays the blazing hypocrisy that often rears its ugly head when self-righteous men attempt to use denigration and guilt to control women... Well, independent, sensual women, at any rate...

    Enjoy!

    What??? Crap...

    Lemme try the vid...

    Yep... Well, Crud..

If you can get YouTube, I'd recommend the movie highly - it's a bit old-fashioned, but really shows the sexist hypocrisy of "pious" preachers...
