Really, it shows that this world puts way too much emphasis on sports. These guys are deified, for heaven's sakes!

I don't think anyone is naive enough anymore to expect sports heroes to be role models. But there are those rare athletes who seemed to do things the right way, like Troy Aikman. Of course, as soon as I say that, he'll probably be involved in a scandal today. What's the old saying? "All my heroes have feet of clay."

I expect sports "heroes" to be excellent in whatever sport they play. I expect musicians to put out good music. I expect actors to do good acting. And nothing else--that would be about like expecting a role model to excel in golf, or to excel in putting out good music or acting. Famous people should be excellent in whatever it is that makes them famous in the first place, but should not be expected to stand out as role models.

One exception: Politicians. Those who are making our laws should be expected to be exemplary in obeying their own laws. If they cannot obey them, they had no business making them in the first place.
